EIGHT TIME NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPION, JOÃO MAGALHÃES IS ONE OF THE NEWEST PORTUGUESE PROFESSIONALS. HE SETS UP HOME IN THE ALGARVE, TO ATTACK EUROPE.

At the age of four, João Magalhães was walking around Quinta do Fojo, in Gaia, with a club in one hand, a bucket of balls in the other, rehearsing swings. At the time, the golfer from Porto tells GOLFE, nobody in the family played. “I started playing by accident,” he remembers. His father had a work meeting at the Quinta do Fojo restaurant, and saw information about a summer golf camp for kids. He enrolled João and his two sisters. João liked it and stayed. Against all odds.

The first coach, Patrícia Brito e Cunha, who was coordinating the camp, would later say in an interview, how that boy, an “authentic baby” in size, impressed her.

She didn’t believe he would stay, due to his age, but João Magalhães’ passion for the game and extraordinary coordination removed all doubts. A golfer was there, if he wanted to. And he always wanted to.

“If I weren’t a golfer, I don’t know what I would be! I don’t say this as if it were the only thing that made me happy or fulfilled, but the truth is that as I don’t think about doing anything else, I don’t even know what it would be beyond golf , says the eight times youth National Champion.

The first title came in 2005, at the age of nine, when he was crowned National Under-10 Champion, repeating the victory the following year. In 2007 and 2008 he was U-12 National Champion, and in 2009 he won the U-14 National Championship, a victory he repeated in 2010. In the U-16, he won the National Championship in 2011, and finished second in the following year.

Aos quatro anos, já João Magalhães andava pela Quinta do Fojo, em Gaia, de taco numa mão, balde de bolas na outra, a ensaiar tacadas. Na altura, conta o golfista portuense à GOLFE, ninguém na família jogava. Foi por acaso, recorda. O pai teve uma reunião de trabalho no restaurante da Quinta do Fojo, e viu uma informação sobre um estágio de Verão. Inscreveu João e as duas irmãs. João foi ficando. Contra todas as probabilidades. A primeira treinadora, Patrícia Brito e Cunha, que estava a coordenar esse estágio, contaria depois numa entrevista, como aquele menino, um “autêntico bebé” em tamanho, a impressionou. Não acreditava que ficasse, pela idade, mas a paixão de João Magalhães pelo jogo e uma coordenação motora extraordinária afastaram todas as dúvidas. Estava ali um golfista, se ele quisesse. E quis, sempre.

“Se não fosse golfista não sei o que seria! Não digo isto como se fosse a única coisa que me fizesse feliz ou realizada, mas a verdade é que como não penso em fazer mais nada não sei mesmo o que seria para além do golfe”, diz, com naturalidade, o oito vezes campeão nacional de jovens.

O primeiro título chegou em 2005, aos nove anos, quando se sagrou campeão nacional sub-10, repetindo a vitória no ano seguinte. Em 2007 e 2008 foi campeão nacional sub12, e em 2009 vence o nacional de sub-14, título que repete em 2010. Já nos sub-16, venceu o campeonato nacional em 2011, e termina em segundo no ano seguinte. Regressa às vitórias em 2013, sagrando-se campeão nacional de sub-18, título que não consegue revalidar em 2014, por estar ao serviço da selecção nacional, no Campeonato Europeu de

Of all that, the 24-year-old golfer who grew up as a member at the Porto Golf Club, highlights the last Junior victory, precisely because he was won at his home club. “It was the most special,” he says with a smile. The same smile with which he speaks of another great personal victory: that of being elected Player of the Year in the AAC Conference, in his last year of college in the United States.

“I was also chosen the First Team All-American,” recalls João Magalhães, referring to the time he spent at Point University, in Georgia, United States. He won two individual titles and learned a lot.

“It was the best experience of my life. I gained a lot from going there to study and play. I grew a lot as a player and as a person,” he says, excited, pointing out the lifestyle, the academic environment and the team. “Spectacular. I went back without thinking twice, I created friendships for life.” However, on this path - as in all paths - there were also setbacks. Bad days. At 16, after losing the 2012 National, he went through a crisis of confidence, which kept him away from the golf courses for a few months. When he returned, he came with the confidence to win the U18 Championship. Misfortune slammed the door a few months after becoming a professional, a hip injury required a delicate surgery, eight long months of recovery without the possibility of training. “Right now I am fully recovered and training without limitations, but it was tough,” he says, directing the conversation to the future.

The immediate planis playing the Pro Golf Tour, as a way to get to the Challenge Tour. “It is the immediate objective. A prize for my work and the team that accompanies me,”

Destes todos, o golfista de 24 anos que cresceu como jogador no Oporto Golf Club, destaca o último, precisamente por ter sido ganho em casa. “Foi o mais especial”, diz com um sorriso, que o transporta para outra grande vitória pessoal: a de ter sido eleito o Jogador do Ano da Conferência AAC, no último ano de faculdade nos Estados Unidos. “Fui também escolhido para a First Team All-American”, recorda João Magalhães, referindo-se ao tempo que passou na Point University, na Georgia, Estados Unidos. Ganhou dois títulos individuais e aprendeu imenso.

“Foi a melhor experiência da minha vida. Ganhei muito em ter ido para lá estudar e jogar, cresci muito como jogador e pessoa”, afirma, entusiasmado, apontando o estilo de vida, o ambiente académico e na equipa. “Espetacular. Voltava a fazê-lo sem pensar duas vezes, criei amizades para a vida.” Mas, neste percurso – como em todos os caminhos – também existiram contratempos. Dias maus. Aos 16 anos, depois de ter perdido o nacional de 2012, passa por uma crise de confiança, que o afasta nos campos durante alguns meses. Quando regressa, vem com a confiança necessária para vencer o campeonato de sub-18. O infortúnio bateu a porta poucos meses depois de se tornar profissional, uma lesão na anca obrigou a uma delicada cirurgia, foram oito longos meses de recuperação sem possibilidade de treinar. “Neste momento estou totalmente recuperado em treino sem limitações, mas foi duro”, conta, direcionando a conversa para o futuro.

O imediato, passa por jogar o Pro Golf Tour, como caminho para chegar ao Challenge Tour. “É o objectivo imediato. Um prémio para o meu trabalho e para a equipa que me acompanha”, diz, referindo-se ao treinador Hugo Santos, ao supervisor David Llewelyn, a Miguel Valença que treina e planeia a época, ao preparador físico Afonso Girão, à

Puxamos muito um pelo outro”, adianta João Magalhães que divide o dia entre os treinos, o jogo e o ginásio. “Não tenho qualquer tipo de distração e estou focado a 100%”, garante, agradecendo o apoio que a família Melo Gouveia tem dado. “Sou mais um filho para eles, e sinto-me em casa aqui.”

João Magalhães, que tem como ídolos Pedro Figueiredo – “Tenho o prazer de ser um grande amigo do Pedro. É uma pessoa especial, não conheço ninguém que não o adore. Um grande jogador, que é também uma grande pessoa” – e Justin Rose, não esconde que aponta para o topo. “Os objetivos a longo prazo, são ser o melhor possível. Procuro trabalhar todos os dias para conseguir atingir o meu melhor, mas tenho como sonho, ganhar no European Tour.” Até lá, é vê-lo, nos campos do Algarve, de todo o país, e da Europa, de taco numa mão, bola voando alto, a ensaiar swings e a somar birdies.
