FRANK KENNEDY WINS INTERNACIONAL AMADOR DE PORTUGAL
Englishman Frank Kennedy in February became one of the youngest ever winners of the Men’s International Amateur Championship of Portugal. At just 16 years old he made history, winning the 92nd edition of the Portuguese Golf Federation (FPG) event with 19 strokes under par, a new tournament record for 72 holes. The Englishman residing in Manchester – and, of course, a fan of CR7 – but who spends many months a year in Jupiter, Florida, where he has ‘neighbors’ like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, totaled 269 strokes, 19 under par at the Montado Hotel & Golf Resort, after rounds of 65, 69, 64 and 71. It was a ‘wire-to-wire’ triumph, that is, he commanded from the first to the last day and even had the bonus of having equaled the Palmela course record on his day of 64 (-8). “I am very proud of my victory and I hope to return next year (to defend the title). It’s my first top-flight title (from the EGA, European Golf Association), it’s the most important I’ve ever won,” said Frank Kennedy, who added shortly afterwards that he had “big dreams” for his career. With 22 birdies and 1 eagle, he left the 2nd place, German Finn Koelle, at a comfortable distance of four shots.
The Nations Cup, which counted the results of the first three days, was won by Germany, which totaled 413 strokes, also 19 under par, adding partials of 142, 134 and 137. Germany was runner-up in 2021 and beat this year the second team from the Netherlands by 2 strokes. More impressive was the fact that Germany’s third team tied for 2nd place with -17. Portugal ranked 14th with 430 (145+143+142), -2, among a total of 32 teams, representing 23 countries.
Regarding the Portuguese team, which is in a rebuilding phase, the results turned out to be positive, with three players making the cut: Hugo Camelo Ferreira (16th), João Miguel Pereira (35th) and Pedro Clare Neves (41). O inglês residente em Manchester – e, claro, fã de CR7 – mas que passa largos meses por ano em Jupiter, na Florida, onde tem ‘vizinhos’ como Tiger Woods e Rory McIlroy, totalizou 269 pancadas, 19 abaixo do Par do Montado Hotel & Golf Resort, após voltas de 65, 69, 64 e 71. Foi um triunfo ‘wire-to-wire’, ou seja, comandou da primeira à última volta e ainda teve o bónus de ter igualado o recorde do campo de Palmela com a sua terceira volta de 64 (-8), fixado pela primeira vez um dia antes, na quinta-feira, pelo italiano Flavio Michetti.
“Estou muito orgulhoso pela minha vitória e espero voltar para o ano (para defender o título). É o meu primeiro título no escalão principal (da EGA, Associação Europeia de Golfe), é o mais importante que já ganhei”, disse Frank Kennedy, que acrescentou pouco depois ter “grandes sonhos” de carreira.
Com 22 birdies e 1 eagle, deixou o 2.º classificado, o alemão Finn Koelle, a uma confortável distância de quatro pancadas.
A Taça das Nações, que contou os resultados dos três primeiros dias, foi conquistada pela Alemanha, que somou 413 pancadas, também 19 abaixo do Par, somando parciais de 142, 134 e 137. A Alemanha fora vice-campeã em 2021 e bateu este ano a segunda formação dos Países Baixos por 2 pancadas. Mais impressionante foi o facto de a terceira formação da Alemanha ter empatado no 2.º lugar com -17. Portugal ficou em 14.º com 430 (145+143+142), -2, entre um total de 32 equipas, representando 23 países.
Em relação à selecção portuguesa, que está numa fase de renovação, os resutados acabam por ser positivos, com três jogadores a passarem o cut: Hugo Camelo Ferreira (16.º), João Miguel Pereira (35.º) e Pedro Clare Neves (41.º).
