OPEN XIRAGOLFE 2022: PORTUGAL AND SPAIN TOGETHER IN INTERNACIONAL EVENT
The XiraGolfe Open will become an international event and raise its prize money from 6,000 to a minimum of 10,000 euros, after the agreement reached between the PGA’s of Portugal and Spain.
The second edition of the tournament organized by Xira Golfe and the PGA de Portugal will take place from the 21st to the 24th of July, at Santo Estêvão Golfe and Ribagolfe Lakes, in Benavente, and will be part of the official calendars of the two PGA’s, as well as the two national federations. It will count towards the Order of Merit of the PGA España, for the Order of Merit and Ranking of the PGA of Portugal and also for the ranking of the national team of professionals of the Portuguese Golf Federation (PGF). “With the success of the event in 2021, the challenge was to do more and better. The idea came up in conversation with Fernando Carvalho, the president of Xira Golfe, and consisted of internationalizing the tournament,” said Nelson Cavalheiro, the President of the PGA of Portugal. “With access to professional players outside the scope of PGA Portugal, competitiveness will be higher and prize money more desirable. The idea of talking to PGA España came up. The Tournament will be open to all professionals from a recognized PGA,” added Nelson Cavalheiro.
“We also aspire to multiply the number of amateurs who will participate in the qualifying competitions. Our goal is to reach 250 qualifying rounds and mark the summer at Ribatejo in the coming years,” said Fernando Carvalho.
OOpen XiraGolfe vai tornar-se num evento internacional e elevar os seus prémios monetários de 6 mil para um mínimo de 10 mil euros, depois do acordo realizado entre as PGA’s de Portugal e de Espanha. A segunda edição do torneio organizado pelo Xira Golfe e pela PGA de Portugal realiza-se de 21 a 24 de julho, no Santo Estêvão Golfe e no Ribagolfe Lakes, em Benavente, e fará parte dos calendários oficiais das duas PGA’s, bem como das duas federações nacionais.
Irá contar para a Ordem de Mérito da PGA España, para a Ordem de Mérito e Ranking da PGA de Portugal e ainda para o ranking da seleção nacional de profissionais da Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG).
“Com o sucesso da prova em 2021 o desafio era fazermos mais e melhor. A ideia surgiu em conversa com o Fernando Carvalho, o presidente do Xira Golfe, e consistiu em internacionalizar o torneio”, disse Nelson Cavalheiro, o presidente da PGA de Portugal. “Com o acesso a jogadores profissionais fora do âmbito da PGA Portugal, a competitividade será mais elevada e o ‘prize money’ mais apetecível. Surgiu a ideia de falarmos com a PGA España. O Torneio será aberto a todos os profissionais de uma PGA reconhecida”, acrescentou Nelson Cavalheiro.
“Aspiramos também a multiplicar o número dos amadores que venham participar nas provas de qualificação. O nosso objetivo é atingir as 250 voltas de qualificação e marcar o verão no Ribatejo nos próximos anos”, disse Fernando Carvalho.
À semelhança do ano de estreia, em 2021, qualquer jogador amador pode ser apurado para participar no Pro-Am, bastando classificar-se nos primeiros 15 lugares de uma das 3 provas de qualificação.
Mas a festa dos amadores não se fica pelo sempre apetecível Pro-Am, este ano ainda mais forte com a presença de profissionais estrangeiros. Como explica o presidente do clube anfitrião, “os dois primeiros da classificação Gross de cada prova de qualificação têm acesso ao próprio Open, jogando os três dias com os profissionais, sabendo que poderão pontuar para o World Amateur Golf Ranking”. Esse é outro dos grandes atributos da prova. Ao contar para o ranking mundial amador, poderá cativar os melhores amadores portugueses.
No ano passado, Tiago Cruz a bateu Tomás Melo Gouveia num play-off para conquistar o título. Tiago Cruz foi o campeão nacional de 2014 e 2015 e Tomás Melo Gouveia é atualmente membro do Challenge Tour.
As in the debut year, in 2021, any amateur player can be qualified to participate in the Pro-Am, simply by classifying in the first 15 places of one of the 3 qualifying events.
But the amateur party doesn’t stop at the always desirable Pro-Am, this year even stronger with the presence of foreign professionals. As the president of the host club explains, “the top two in the Gross classification of each qualifying event have access to the Open itself, playing the three days with the professionals, knowing that they will be able to score points for the World Amateur Golf Ranking.” This is another of the great attributes of the Open. By counting on the world amateur ranking, you will be able to captivate the best Portuguese amateurs.
Last year, Tiago Cruz beat Tomás Melo Gouveia in a playoff to win the title. Tiago Cruz was the 2014 and 2015 ational champion and Tomás Melo Gouveia is currently a member of the Challenge Tour.
