His last victory had been in the Swiss Challenge in June 2019. Now, Ricardo Santos has won again, and at home, at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, in Vilamoura, at the Optilink Tour Championship. He is the first Portuguese to win the PT Tour final.

Santos, who was national champion in 2011 and 2016, withstood the competition’s attacks well and even had the luxury of extending the margin of victory to 6 strokes in relation to the 2nd classified, the Scotsman Kieran Cantley and the Englishman Ben Bailey. With a third and final round of 67 strokes, 5 under par, very close to his record the day before of 66 (-6), which had allowed him to take command, Ricardo Santos totaled 203 (-13) and guaranteed himself the first place check of 3,500 euros of the total ‘purse ‘ of 20 thousand euros. “My game is going in the direction I want to be able to have more winning opportunities or fight for them,” said the Titleist pro, who doesn’t feel like he has to make big adaptations to his game after so many years on the circuit.

“It’s always great to win again, especially when the last victory was two and a half years ago, more or less,” said the champion of a European Tour title (the 2012 Madeira Islands Open BPI) and two trophies on the Challenge Tour (the Princess by Schuco, in Sweden, in 2011 and the Swiss Challenge, in 2019).

The Optilink Tour Championship had a total of 70 participants and three more Portuguese managed to finish the event in the top-10. Pedro Figueiredo, also a DP World Tour player, was the first round leader of the tournament, after a good initial round of 68 (-4) and finished in 8th place with 213 (-3), receiving 750 euros. Tomás Melo Gouveia, member of the Challenge Tour, was ranked 9th, with 214 (-2), tied with fellow Portuguese Hugo Santos and Scotsman Jeff Wright, each pocketing 675 euros in prize money.

Santos, que foi campeão nacional de 2011 e 2016 aguentou bem os ataques da concorrência e ainda se deu ao luxo de dilatar a margem de vitória para 6 pancadas em relação aos 2.º classificados, o escocês Kieran Cantley e o inglês Ben Bailey.Com uma terceira e última volta de 67 pancadas, 5 abaixo do Par, muito perto do seu registo da véspera de 66 (-6), que lhe tinha permitido assaltar o comando, Ricardo Santos totalizou 203 (-13) e garantiu o cheque de 3.500 euros referente ao primeiro prémio do ‘prize-money’ total de 20 mil euros. “O meu jogo está a ir na direção que eu quero para poder ter mais oportunidades de vitórias ou andar na luta por elas”, disse o profissional da Titleist, que não sente que tenha de fazer grandes adaptações ao seu jogo, passados tantos anos no circuito. “É sempre muito bom voltar a ganhar, especialmente quando a última vitória já tinha sido há dois anos e meio, mais ou menos”, disse o campeão de um título do European Tour (o Madeira Islands Open BPI de 2012) e de dois troféus no Challenge Tour (o Princess by Schuco, na Suécia, em 2011 e o Swiss Challenge, em 2019).
