WE, THE SENIOR LADIES!
There are few sports in which its participation is as active and competitive from the age of 50 as it is in Golf.
According to official data for 2021, in Portugal there were: 15,579 players with an active sports license, of which 3,228 (21%) are women. Of the 15,579, 11,137 are seniors (71%): 8,563 men (77%) and 2,574 women (23%). In short, 80% of female golfers in Portugal are over 50 years old. The arrival at the Senior level in golf is therefore an absolute surprise, due to the multiplicity of programs and competitions organized by entities ranging from the Golf Society (unfortunately little known and valued in Portugal), to Clubs, to regional, national or international Associations, in our case European, to which practitioners can aspire according to their level of play.
This was not always the case and the origin of this senior golf movement in Portugal began with a small number of players, mostly men, who started playing golf in the post World War II era and which, in the mid-1980s, were organized into more traditional clubs such as Oporto, Lisbon and Estoril.

Segundo dados oficiais de 2021, existem em Portugal: 15.579 jogadores com licença desportiva activa, dos quais 3.228 (21%) são senhoras. Destes, 11.137 são seniores (71%): 8.563 homens (77%) e 2.574 senhoras (23%). Resumindo, 80% das jogadoras de golfe em Portugal têm mais de 50 anos.
A chegada ao escalão Sénior no Golfe é por isso uma absoluta surpresa, pela multiplicidade de programas e competições organizadas por entidades que vão desde as Golf Society (infelizmente pouco conhecidas e valorizadas em Portugal), aos Clubes, às Associações regionais, nacionais ou internacionais, no nosso caso Europeias, a que podem aspirar os praticantes de acordo com o seu nível de jogo.
Nem sempre assim foi e a origem desde movimento sénior do golfe em Portugal começou com um reduzido número de jogadores, maioritariamente homens, que iniciaram a prática do golfe no pós II Guerra Mundial e que, em meados dos anos 80 do século passado, se foram organizando nos Clubes mais tradicionais como sejam Oporto, Lisbon e Estoril.

Ana Maria Pessanha, Boudil Dibo, Helen Burmester, Leonor Abecassis, Luísa Menezes, Luísa Teixeira, Manuela Costa Basto, Nini Guedes Queiroz and Teresa Symington, among others, were our first representatives. They are also due to the good relations that were soon established between the European senior players who later founded the European Senior Ladies Golf Association (ESLGA) of which the Portuguese Association of Seniors de Golf Ladies (APSGS) is a founding member and the sole legitimate representative of Portugal.
The main objective of ESLGA in its creation was the organization of international competitions for the players affiliated to the various National Associations and the organization of an International Tournament of Nations where the best senior players who do not have access to the European Championships organized by the EGA take part.
Despite the fact that almost three quarters of golfers in Portugal with an active licenses are at the senior level, the Portuguese Golf Federation has not granted any support to international representatives at this level in the last decade, claiming either different strategic guidelines, sometimes lack of funds, sometimes lack of sporting quality of the putative candidates to integrate a selection under its auspices.
On the calendar of the Associations affiliated to ESLGA are the most important international competitions that Portuguese seniors can aspire to and they do it with enormous organizational, sporting and social commitment! Cedo as senhoras acompanharam este movimento, pois um conjunto de praticantes muito empenhadas e a expensas próprias representou Portugal, desde o início dos anos 90, em campeonatos europeus de seniores sob a organização e determinação de uma cidadã nascida na Polónia, mas portuguesa de coração e a quem o golfe sénior feminino português quase tudo deve: Teresa Symington.
Ana Maria Pessanha, Boudil Dibo, Helen Burmester, Leonor Abecassis, Luísa Menezes, Luísa Teixeira, Manuela Costa Basto, Nini Guedes Queiroz e Teresa Symington, entre outras, foram as nossas primeiras representantes. A elas se devem também as boas relações que cedo se foram estabelecendo entre as jogadoras seniores europeias que vieram posteriormente a fundar a European Senior Ladies Golf Association (ESLGA) da qual a Associação Portuguesa de Seniores de Golfe - Senhoras (APSGS) é sócia fundadora e a única e legítima representante de Portugal.
A ESLGA teve como objectivo maior da sua criação, a organização de competições internacionais para as jogadoras filiadas nas diversas Associações Nacionais e a organização de um Torneio Internacional das Nações onde têm lugar as melhores jogadoras seniores que que não tenham acesso aos Campeonatos Europeus organizados pela EGA.
Apesar de quase três quartos dos jogadores de golfe em Portugal com licença activa serem do escalão sénior, a Federação Portuguesa de Golfe não concedeu na última década qualquer apoio a representações internacionais deste escalão, alegando ora orientações estratégicas diversas, ora falta de verba, ora falta de qualidade desportiva das putativas candidatas a integrar uma selecção sob a sua égide.
In 2022 Portugal has, like many European countries, senior women's golf institutionally organized independently or autonomously.
It's good? It's bad? It's a fact!
And it is a fact that, despite the reduced number of practicing ladies compared to most European countries, Portugal and APSGS have asserted themselves in terms of sport and organization because over these more than 30 years we have: Been a regular presence in the International Tournament of Nations – Marisa Sgaravatti Trophy, a competition already organized twice in Portugal (Golf do Estoril in 1994 and Penha Longa 2010); Contributed annually to the ESLGA's annual calendar of events with two competitions: Internacional do Algarve, which celebrates its 30th edition in 2023 – therefore the oldest international senior golf competition held in Portugal – and Internacional de Lisboa, open to all the seniors affiliated to any world federation and which is already in its 8th edition; Annually promoted meetings between representatives of similar Associations, such as Norsk Senior Golf and AESGOLF Damas.
There is, therefore, more than 30 years of dedication to golf at the senior female level, managing with scarce means to carry out quality nationally and internationally recognized sporting events that seek to combine social and cultural events that meet the multiple interests of an international audience of competitive, cultured and interested members and participants.
The effort of Teresa Symington and the ladies who accompanied her – it is of the most elementary justice to highlight Anke Eckardt and Isabel O'neill as two of her most valuable “right arms” – and the immense heritage and successes already achieved will always be our beacon and, in 2022 in which we celebrate a decade as a legally independent Association, if there were candles, the secret desire would only be to do more, much more, and even better, if we are capable of doing so. I hope!
No calendário das Associações filiadas na ESLGA estão então as provas internacionais mais importantes a que as seniores portuguesas podem aspirar. E fazem-no com enorme empenho organizativo, desportivo e social!
Em 2022 Portugal tem, à semelhança de muitos países europeus o golfe sénior feminino institucionalmente organizado de forma independente ou autónoma.
É bom? É mau? É um facto!
E é um facto que, apesar do reduzido número de senhoras praticantes comparativamente com a maior parte dos países europeus, Portugal e a APSGS se têm afirmado desportiva e organizativamente pois ao longo destes mais de 30 anos temos: Sido presença assídua no Torneio Internacional das Nações – Trofeu Marisa Sgaravatti competição já por duas vezes organizada em Portugal (Golf do Estoril em 1994 e Penha Longa 2010); Contribuído anualmente para o calendário anual de eventos da ESLGA com duas competições: Internacional do Algarve que celebra em 2023 a sua 30ª edição – sendo por isso a mais antiga competição internacional sénior de golfe que se realiza em Portugal – e o Internacional de Lisboa, aberto a todas as seniores filiadas numa qualquer federação mundial e que vai já na sua 8ª edição; Promovido anualmente encontros entre representações de Associações congéneres, como sejam a Norsk Senior Golf e a AESGOLF Damas.
São, assim, mais de 30 anos de dedicação ao Golfe no escalão sénior feminino, conseguindo com meios escassos concretizar eventos de qualidade desportiva reconhecida nacional e internacionalmente a que se procuram aliar eventos sociais e culturais que vão de encontro aos múltiplos interesses de uma plateia internacional de sócias e participantes competitivas, cultas e interessadas. O esforço de Teresa Symington e das Senhoras que a acompanharam – é da mais elementar justiça realçar Anke Eckardt e Isabel O’neill como dois dos seus mais valiosos “braços direitos” – e o imenso património e êxitos já alcançados serão sempre o nosso farol e, neste 2022 em que celebramos uma década como Associação juridicamente independente, se velas houvesse, o desejo secreto seria apenas e só o de fazer mais, muito mais, e cada vez melhor, se disso formos capazes. Oxalá!.
