Plastic: Remaking Our World

The new maat exhibition tells the amazing but alarming story of the invention of plastic, an artificial material invented over 150 years ago. The exhibition is organised by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany and V&A Dundee in Scotland, where it first opened. How did it become so essential and, at the same time, so superfluous? How has it contributed to today’s overwhelming environmental pollution crisis? How, more important still, how can we rethink its value and the way that we have let it into our lives? ➝ maat – Museu de Arte, Arquitectura e Tecnologia. Until 28 Aug. Wed-Mon 10am-7pm. €6-€17.

MEO Kalorama

The first big late-summer festival in Europe was a huge success. And judging from the names that have already confirmed, the second promises to be the same. Archipelago Hervé Di Rosa

Thanks to Hervé Di Rosa and his museum MIAM – Musée International des Arts Modestes in Sète in France, we learn about different forms of creation that have been rejected as recognised arts by museums, critics and even history. These include comic strips, psychedelic art and outsider art. As we go in, we are greeted by “Tous en bateaux” (1988), a large-size work by Di Rosa himself. ➝ maat – Museu de Arte, Arquitectura e Tecnologia. Until 11 Sep. Mon and Wed-Tue 10am-7pm. €6-€17.

Histories of a Collection. Modern and Contemporary Art

Since it was founded in 1956, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has acquired contemporary art works not only to support artists but also to give the public a chance to see art works of their time.

But how is a collection set up? What are the stories behind it and the stories that it tells us? This is what we are invited to see on the 40th anniversary of the Modern Art Centre - CAM. The building has been under renovation since last year and is expected to reopen in early 2024. Until then, the Gulbenkian Foundation is anticipating the future with a retrospective. The exhibition Histories of a Collection. Modern and Contemporary Art at CAM looks back on 40 and 65 years of acquisitions that have contributed to one of the most prestigious collections of modern and contemporary art in Portugal.Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Avenida de Berna, 45 A. Until 18 Sep. Tue-Mon and Wed-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 10am-9pm. €6 (free on Sundays after 2pm).

Tue-Sat 1pm-7pm. Free admission.

Flea Market at Campo de Santa Clara All year round

Some things never change – which is great. We’re talking about the weird and absurd mix of stuff sold at the Flea Market every week. This Lisbon classic never goes out of style and you can always find a few interesting items – you just have to be patient and look carefully. Guns, coins and old stamps are the most popular collector’s items, but the truly surreal is just around every corner in the form of weird Barbies, dying home appliances and decorative items that defy the most creative interior decorators. Campo de Santa Clara. Tue and Sat 8am-2pm.

LxMarket at Lx Factory All year round

If Alcântara is cool, then a large part of it is due to Lx Factory, a kind of private condominium with everything you could possibly want – a river view, stores for clothing and interior decoration, creative workshops, bars and clubs, and lots of delicious things to eat at the different restaurants. Sunday is a holy day there as well, and Lx Factory celebrates it with its usual street market. You will find unique handmade, vintage or second hand pieces.Rua Rodrigues Faria, 103. Sun 10am-6pm.

Príncipe Real Outdoor Market All year round

The outdoor market in Príncipe Real is a compulsory stop every weekend, featuring small producers and artisans. You may need pen and paper to take this all down. Every Saturday (7am-2pm) there’s an organic market with fruit and veggies. On the last Saturday and Monday of every month (10am-6pm) there’s an antique and handicraft fair in the garden. Portugal Real, with regional food products, is held on the second Friday and Saturday of every month (10am-6pm). And finally, on the first Friday and Saturday of every month, there’s a handicraft and natural product market, Sabor de Perdição. Jardim do Príncipe Real.
