MUSEUMS and contemporary art galleries are permanent fixtures in any cultural itinerary in Lisbon – but where are the emerging artists? The ones not in the spotlight? Here, of course. Each of these galleries deserves to be explored with a keen eye, down to the last detail.

Galeria Francisco Fino MARVILA

Galeria Francisco Fino opened in 2012 with exhibitions at different cultural venues in Lisbon. Eleven years later, the gallery is a big name in the country’s cultural geography thanks to partnerships with institutions and artistic events. In addition to its business activity, it provides a forum for dialogue between artists, curators and other agents in the arts, committed to aesthetics and contemporary cultural cartography. → Rua Capitão Leitão, 76. (+351) 215 842 211. Tue-Fri 12pm-7pm, Sat 2pm-7pm. Only by appointment.

Underdogs MARVILA

Born in 2010 in a colossal warehouse in Braço de Prata, Underdogs exhibits work by some of the biggest artists of our time. This immense artistic collective used to have a foot in Marvila and a foot in Cais do Sodré, but they came together to set up a stronghold in a warehouse on Rua Fernando Palha. Art pieces were formerly housed in two separate spaces, but now they all live under one roof: Underdogs Art Store. Find it in Marvila, near their old gallery. You can also visit Underdogs Capsule for smaller exhibitions and experimental projects. → Rua Fernando Palha, Armazém, 56. +351 218 680 462. Tue-Sat 2pm-7pm.

Art Room PRÍNCIPE REAL

On individual exhibition days, there are fewer choices, even so, illustration and silkscreen are one of the main strongsuits of this charming attic in Príncipe Real. If you want to prepare a visit, you can always check their Instagram page first, where the Art Room is sure to share the latest news.

→ Pátio do Tijolo, 1. +351 968 516 630. Only open when there are exhibitions. Check their Instagram (@artroom.pt) for events calendar.
