Always full of the typical Rabelo boats loaded with barrels, the River Douro embraces those who arrive at the city of Porto. Increasingly more people are succumbing to the many charms and uniqueness of the capital of the north of Portugal. Our special guest Emmy Urban was no exception and accepted our invitation to explore the heart of Porto, known in history as the Invicta, the city that was never defeated. We lose ourselves, however, when it comes to the picturesque Ribeira overlooking the famous wine cellars and the Dom Luis Bridge, full of narrow alleyways and typical houses with colourful façades, which have resisted time and take us back to the past. The temptation to set off and explore is irresistible, which is precisely what do we do immediately after checking in at the amazing Pestana Vintage Porto, directly overlooking the Douro.
Por fora nem nos apercebemos, mas na realidade o Pestana Vintage é um conjunto de seis prédios históricos, que remontam aos séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII, e cuja recuperação é de louvar. Mário Candeias, diretor de operações dos Hotéis Pestana Collection, defende que esta recuperação é reflexo do enorme respeito que o grupo tem pelo Património Mundial da Humanidade e que o conceito vintage do hotel está a atrair sobretudo a geração Y. É fácil entender tanto sucesso. A excelente localização permite umas férias sem carro, a vista é deslumbrante, o serviço é cuidado e muito descontraído e a decoração apresenta autênticas jóias do design português. Destaque para as cadeiras originais desenhadas pelo arquitecto Fernando Távora, a evocar os anos 50, que se misturam com ilustrações contemporâneas e reinterpretações retro de polaroids. Esta filosofia retro estende-se por todo o hotel, incluindo cada um dos 109 quartos disponíveis.
A tentação de ficar pelo hotel pode ser grande, dado o conforto e as vistas em cada recanto, mas maior é o desejo de correr as ruelas de granito que desenham o centro histórico da cidade.
From the outside you can't really tell but the Pestana Vintage is in fact a set of six historic buildings, dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which has undergone commendable restoration work. Mario Candeias, Chief Operating Officer of the Pestana Hotels Collection, explains that this recovery reflects the enormous respect that the group has for World Heritage Sites and that the hotel's vintage concept hotel is mainly attracting Generation Y. It's easy to understand why it's so successful. The excellent location means there's no need for a car, the view is stunning and the service is attentive and very relaxed. The decor features true gems of Portuguese design, in particular, the original chairs designed by the architect Fernando Tavora that evoke the 50s, blending with the contemporary illustrations and retro reinterpretations of Polaroid's. This retro philosophy extends throughout the hotel, including in each of the 109 rooms available.
You may be greatly tempted to stay in, at the hotel, given its comfort and the views from each of its corners, but even greater is the desire to roam the granite alleyways of the city's historical centre.
Perca-se num passeio sem roteiros obrigatórios, dominado por escadarias, becos e vielas que fogem aos pontos turísticos e onde a surpresa é uma constante. Os pontos de interesse que rodeiam o hotel são tantos, que siga por onde seguir vai descobrir pérolas como a loja La Paz. Uma antiga farmácia do século XIX que foi recuperada para acolher a conceituada marca de roupa masculina dos designers André Teixeira e José Miguel Abreu. Os interiores de madeira meticulosamente recuperados e as montras de ferro forjado são uma constante nas pequenas lojas espalhados pela cidade e que felizmente estão a ser recuperadas.
Além das lojas, vários monumentos e cafés atestam a riqueza económica e intelectual do Porto. Partindo da Ribeira poderá caminhar facilmente a pé até ao Palácio da Bolsa, à Sé Catedral e à emblemática Torre dos Clérigos. Construída em 1754 no estilo barroco, a Torre dos Clérigos era na altura o edifício mais alto em Portugal, com os seus seis andares e 75 metros de altura. Se subir os 240 degraus que o levam ao topo, a seguir o melhor é relaxar um pouco num dos cafés históricos, muitas vezes ligados à tradição das tertúlias literárias, como é o caso do Majestic, obra prima da arte nova na Rua de Santa Catarina. Foi considerado em 2011 como o sexto café mais bonito do mundo.
Lose yourself on a tour without any mandatory itineraries, dominated by steps, backstreets and alleys that are far from the usual tourist traps and where you are constantly being surprised. There are so many points of interest surrounding the hotel that whatever direction you choose to follow, you will come across treasures such as the La Paz shop, a former 19th century pharmacy that has been recovered to host the prestigious menswear brand by the designers André Teixeira and José Miguel Abreu. The meticulously restored interior wood and wrought iron windows are commonplace in the small shops scattered throughout the city and are fortunately being restored.
In addition to the shops, several monuments and cafes reflect Porto's economic and intellectual wealth. Starting at the Ribeira you can easily walk on foot to the Stock Exchange Palace, the Sé Cathedral and the emblematic Clerics Tower.
Built in 1754 in Baroque style, the Clerics Tower was then the tallest building in Portugal, with six storeys and 75 metres high. If you decided to climb the 240 steps that lead to the top, then it's best to relax a little afterwards at one of the historic cafes, often linked to the tradition of literary gatherings, such as the Majestic, a masterpiece of new art on Rua de Santa Catarina. In 2011 it was considered the sixth most beautiful cafe in the world.
Outro exemplo mundialmente conhecido da Arte Nova no Porto é a belíssima fachada de azulejo da Pérola do Bolhão, uma mercearia gourmet aberta desde 1917 na Rua Formosa. Para quem gosta de mercados e descobrir a oferta de produtos frescos, recomendase uma passagem pelo Mercado do Bolhão, construído em plena Primeira Guerra Mundial. Tal é a beleza desta cidade que o mais provável é que, ao longo deste passeio, lhe surja a vontade de saber mais pormenores sobre a cidade.
O sitio ideal para encontrar mais informação é a Livraria Lello, considerada pelo jornal inglês The Guardian como uma das mais belas do mundo. Inaugurada em 1906, com estilo neogótico, esta livraria tem uma serpeteante esquadaria rubra, tetos trabalhados e vitrais coloridos que apaixonam quem nela entra.
Desejamos continuar perdidos neste passeio, mas a chegada de um velho amigo de Emmy Urban, a nossa convidada especial, leva-nos até à estação de São Bento. Os vinte mil azulejos, na maioria azuis e brancos, conferem um ar nobre à estação de comboios e dão a conhecer momentos da história do país.
Another example of world-renowned Art Nouveau in Porto is the beautiful tile façade of the Pérola do Bolhão, a gourmet grocery on Rua Formosa which has been open since 1917. For those who like markets and discovering fresh products, we recommend a stop at the Bolhão Market, built in the midst of the First World War. Such is the beauty of this city that it is most likely that this tour will make you want to get to know more details about the city.
The ideal place to find more information is at the Lello bookshop, considered by the British newspaper, The Guardian, as one of the most beautiful in the world. Inaugurated in 1906, with a neo-Gothic style façade, this bookstore has a ruby red winding staircase, ornate ceilings and stained glass windows that fascinate all those who enter it.
We want to continue lost on this tour, but the arrival of an old friend of Emmy Urban's, our special guest, takes us to São Bento station. The twenty thousand, mainly blue and white tiles, give the station a noble air and depict key moments of Portugal's history.
Caída a noite é hora de regressar ao hotel, onde Emmy pretende surpreender o velho amigo Pereira, um confesso apreciador de boa carne. Para isso conta com a ajuda do chef Rui Martins, responsável pelo Rib Beef & Wine, o restaurante recentemente inaugurado no Pestana Vintage Porto. Com a melhor seleção de carnes nacionais DOP e internacionais, o chef vai surpreender o Pereira com um Tomahawk Black Angus Irlandês, um Chateaubriand e um marmoreado RIB Eye. A acompanhar manteiga Café de Paris, tomate assado, confit de cebola com Vinho do Porto e variações de flor de sal. Tudo o que era preciso para por um ponto final num dia perfeito.
It's nightfall and time to return to the hotel where Emmy wants to surprise her old friend Pereira, an avid lover of good meat. For this, she can count on the help of Chef Rui Martins, responsible for Rib Beef & Wine, the restaurant recently opened at the Pestana Vintage Porto. With the best selection of local and international PDO meat, the chef surprised Pereira with an Irish Tomahawk Black Angus, a Chateaubriand and a marbled Rib Eye. Together with Café de Paris butter, roasted tomato, onion confit with Port Wine and flower salt variations. A perfect end to a perfect day.
