Appamado Bhikkhu
Resident Monk at the Sumedharama Buddhist Monastery
Da Biologia Marinha e Engenharia do Ambiente até à Espiritualidade, Appamado Bhikkhu nasceu em Portugal e foi na cidade de Faro, onde estudou, que a sua investigação e abordagem espiritual ganhou cada vez mais sentido na sua vida e o levou a interessar-se por meditação e práticas espirituais Ocidentais e Orientais. Numa visita ao Mosteiro Budista Amaravati, em Inglaterra, decidiu ficar e fazer parte da equipa de apoio ao Retiro de Inverno de 2005. Regressou a Portugal, reorganizou-se e voltou. Desta vez por mais tempo. Visitou o Mosteiro Budista Cittaviveka (Chithurst) e decidiu ordenarse como Anagarika. Mais tarde e com os benefícios da prática monástica comprovados, pediu o Pabbajja – ordenação como monge noviço. Ordenou-se como Bhikkhu em julho de 2009, sendo Luang

From Marine Biology and Environmental Engineering to Spirituality, Appamado Bhikkhu was born in Portugal and it was in Faro, the city where he studied, that his research and spiritual approach started to bring more and more meaning to his life, awakening his interest in meditation and other
Western and Eastern spiritual practices. On a visit to the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England, he decided to stay on and join the 2005 Winter Retreat support team. He returned to Portugal, reorganized his life and went back to England, this time he stayed for longer. He visited the Cittaviveka Buddhist Monastery (Chithurst) and decided to ordain himself as an Anagarika. Later, with the proven experience of monastic practice, he applied for the Pabbajja – ordination as a novice monk. He was ordained a Bhikkhu, a senior monk, in July 2009, with Luang Por Sumedho as his tutor. Appamado currently resides in the Sumedharama Buddhist Monastery near Ericeira, Portugal.
Qual é a sua memória de viagem mais antiga?
As viagens de verão para o Algarve e as idas a Espanha. A memória de atravessar a fronteira com os meus pais, quando eu tinha cerca de três anos de idade.
Quando foi a primeira vez que viajou por conta própria, sem os seus pais ou sem a supervisão de um adulto?
Quando tinha 18 anos, em Portugal e quando tinha 26 anos, internacionalmente. Fui a um mosteiro budista em Inglaterra.
Fui por terra e de barco, através de Espanha e França, em transportes públicos, à boleia e a caminhar.
Quais são os seus destinos de férias favoritos?
Não sei se os poderei chamar de destinos de férias, talvez a melhor designação seja a de destinos de peregrinação. Os Himalaias, a Índia e o Nepal.
Tem hábitos ou rituais específicos quando chega a um quarto de hotel?
Instalo-me, desfaço a minha bagagem e organizo as minhas coisas no quarto. E tomo um banho!
Quando viaja, o que é que mais valoriza no momento de escolher o hotel ou o local para ficar?
Tranquilidade e limpeza.

Para onde iria para se isolar do resto do mundo?
Para os Himalaias.
What is your earliest travel memory?
Summer trips to the Algarve and Spain. Crossing the border with my parents when I was about three years old.
When was the first time you travelled on your own, without your parents or the supervision of an adult?
When I was 18 years old in Portugal. When I was 26, I went abroad to a Buddhist Monastery in England and I went by land and by sea, across Spain and France, on public transport, hitchhiking and walking.
What are your favourite holiday destinations?
I am not sure if I can call them holiday destinations, they're more like pilgrimage destinations, the Himalayas, India and Nepal.
Do you have any particular habits or rituals when you first get to a hotel room?
I settle in, unpack my luggage, organize my things in the room and take a shower!
When you travel, what is important for you when choosing your hotel or place to stay?
India and England.
What was the place you visited that had the biggest impact on you and why?
The Himalayas due to their magnitude, grandiosity and sense of Divine connection.
How does travelling affect your search and creative process?
It inspires me and opens my horizons.
Where was the place that you felt happiest?
Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England.
How do you prefer to travel?
Airplane, boat, rail and walking.
What do you do to entertain yourself when you’re on a long trip?
I try not to entertain myself with anything and to be present and aware of everything that is happening within and around me at every moment.
Travelling isn’t necessarily going somewhere; it may be, quite simply, taking a break from our daily routine. What do you do in this case?
I walk in nature.
Where would you go to isolate yourself from the rest of the world?
To the Himalayas.
