Springboks call on scrumhalf De Klerk for France test

-

Scrumhalf Faf de Klerk has answered an SOS from South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus and joined the Springbok squad for their Test against France in Paris on Saturday, adding significant experience in a problem position for the side.

De Klerk was initially rested for the November internationals which, coupled with an injury to Ross Cronje, left the side with rookie scrumhalves Louis Schreuder, Embrose Papier and Ivan van Zyl, who had just eight caps between them ahead of the match against England at Twickenham at the weekend.

Following that 12-11 defeat, Erasmus has called on one of his stalwart players from this season in De Klerk, who has been nominated for the World Rugby Player of the Year award for 2018.

South Africa’s squad will also be boosted by the addition of their overseas-based players, who missed the England loss as the game fell outside of the designated international window.

Full-back Wille le Roux, wings Gio Aplon and Cheslin Kolbe, loose-forward Francois Louw, lock Franco Mostert and prop Vincent Koch will available for selection.

The arrival of Mostert is a boost after Eben Etzebeth limped off just two minutes into the secondhalf of Saturday’s test and could miss the rest of the tour.

“Eben looks pretty bad,” Erasmus told reporters. “He is out definitely for France and maybe the tour.”

It would compound a frustrating last 12 months for Etzebeth, who hurt his shoulder playing for the Boks against Wales last December and missed the entire Super Rugby season.

After South Africa’s meeting with France, they play tests against Scotland and Wales later this month.

Star full-back Stuart Hogg earned a recall to the Scotland squad for the November Tests on Monday after almost two months out following ankle surgery.

The 26-year-old is one of six players to be called up by head coach Gregor Townsend for the matches with Fiji, South Africa and Argentina.

Hogg is joined by his Glasgow Warriors teammates Adam Ashe (back-row), Scott Cummings (lock) and Nick Grigg (centre).

Townsend has also called upon English Premiership pair, backrow forward Josh Strauss and fly-half Duncan Weir to bolster the squad after a 21-10 defeat by Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

South African-born Strauss has not played since a defeat in Fiji on the summer tour of 2017, while the last of Weir’s 27 caps came as a replacement against Italy in last year’s Six Nations.

Townsend has four players unavailable for next Saturday’s clash with Fiji.

Scarlets back-row Blade Thomson (head) and Harlequins centre James Lang (rib) suffered injuries playing for their clubs whilst David Denton (Leicester Tigers) and Matt Scott (Edinburgh) are still recovering from head injuries with their respective clubs.
