Aspire gears up to host Qatar’s Strongest Man
Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) has announced that registration is now open to strength athletics for Qatar’s Strongest Man (QSM). The event, scheduled to take place on the 7th of December, is sponsored by Sports Corner.
Only the eight strongest and fastest entrants who successfully complete the physical challenges will proceed to the actual competition. Challenges include a 200kg deadlift, a farmer’s 20m walk while carrying 120kg in each arm, and a giant 160kg tyre flip.
AZF will run the qualification rounds on the 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th of November, from 4:00pm-6:00pm. A technical meeting will also be organised by AZF to familiarise participants with the rules of the competition. On the day of the competition, the eight giants, will face challenges, such as: truck pulling, sand bag lifting, giant tyre flipping, weight lifting, and car lifting. Nasser Abdullah al-Hajri, Director of PR and Communications at AZF, said; “The event is much anticipated by sports-enthusiasts in Qatar. Once registration is open, we receive hundreds of entries. Though QSM is once a year, contestants tend to train regularly to achieve better physical standards to compete, which we are delighted with. One of our main goals is to promote practising an active and healthy life-style throughout the year.”
In 2017, the competition has attracted unprecedented numbers of spectators from the local community, with more than 5,000 fans cheering for competitors in the stands. Abdulazi al-Kuwari and Christopher Oketch were named the champions of the QSM’s Qatari and open categories. This year’s competition will only have one overall winner in a bid to raise the challenge bar even higher.
On the day of the QSM competition, AZF will also organise a series of accompanying community activities for all the family to enjoy at the event. Activities will include a fan zone and play area for children, as well as a variety of local food and beverage stands.
