Murray will fulfil A’s contract
Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray will join the Oakland Athletics in time for spring training, despite speculation he might choose to enter the 2019 NFL Draft instead, his agent, Scott Boras, told the
San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday. “Kyler has every intention of fulfilling his agreement with the A’s and he’s grateful he has had the chance to pursue his college goals,” Boras told the Chronicle. “He will be in spring training with the A’s.”
On Thursday, the Associated Press named Murray as its Player of the Year in college football. Murray is one of three finalists - all quarterbacks - for the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded today night in New York. After replacing 2017 Heisman Trophy-winning QB Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma this season, Murray completed 241 passes, 40 of them for touchdowns, for 4,053 yards. He also rushed for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns. The other finalists are Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. Murray opened some of the speculation about his future last weekend when he spoke with Tim Tebow of ESPN about the NFL. “I think that’s something me and my family will talk about at the end of the season and weigh out the options of what the NFL thinks of me,” he said. “Right now, my future’s kinda already planned out, but we’ll see what happens.” Oakland made Murray the No 9 overall pick in the MLB draft in June. “Kyler said more than a week ago that he’s going to spring training,” Boras said. “When people come around this kid and ask him all this stuff about his future and he said, ‘We’ll talk about it after the season,’ that’s what he’s saying. His attitude is, ‘The Oakland A’s gave me an opportunity to fulfil a personal goal in college football and when it’s complete,
I’ll return to my contractual commitment.”
Meanwhile The Red Sox have signed starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to a four-year contract that brings the free agent right-hander back to Boston, the team announced Thursday. Terms of the deal weren’t divulged, but multiple reports peg it to be worth $68 million. The New York Yankees reportedly were interested in Eovaldi but did not want to go past three years on a deal. “We’re very happy to have Nathan back with us,” Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in a news release.
