Nakheel to take on Taleb in Workers’ Cup final

Gulf Times Sport - - SPORT -

Nakheel Landscapes and Taleb Group will meet in the final of the 2019 Workers’ Cup. In the semi-finals played at the Al Sadd Sports Club pitches on Friday, both sides won through penalty shoot-outs. Nakheel prevailed 3-2 (0-0 at the end of regular time) over Galfar Al Misnad and Taleb Group put it past Larsen & Toubro (L&T) 5-4 (1-1 in normal time). The seventh edition of Workers’ Cup, the annual football tournament organised by the Qatar Stars League and sponsored by Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy for those involved in the construction sector in Qatar, had started on 7th December. The final is scheduled for 25th January.

Galfar produced a high-pressing game, but the Nakheel defence stayed resolute and maintained a clean sheet. In the end, the match headed for the tie-breaker that saw both teams tied at 2-2 going into Galfar’s fifth and decisive kick, after two misses each. Nakheel goalkeeper Anas Youssouf then did well to deny Galfar’s Mudhafar Swaleh and send his side to yet another Workers’ Cup final. In the second semi-final, Taleb Group showed their composure to prevail over L&T. Prince Boakye converted a penalty to give L&T a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. The Taleb response was almost immediate, as Isaac Ameyaw finished off a quick attack with an easy tap-in just one minute later to level the score.

In shoot-out, Taleb missed first, with Samuel Agyei skying his effort over the bar, but they regained composure to convert all their remaining kicks while L&T went on to miss twice. The crucial miss came in the sixth kick when L&T vicecaptain Abdulaziz Sulaiman’s penalty went wide, sparking huge celebrations in the Taleb camp, as they booked a final date with Nakheel.
