Brewers’ Burnes sets strikeout record in loss to Cards

Burnes sets record for consecutiv­e strikeouts without a walk, extending his run to 58

Nolan Arenado had three hits and drove in a run as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals posted a 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday.

Arenado’s two-out single off righthande­r Corbin Burnes (2-3) in the first inning scored Tommy Edman, who singled to lead off the game.

Burnes set the all-time record for consecutiv­e strikeouts without a walk, extending his run to 58 before issuing his first free pass of the season in the fifth inning. The old mark of 56 was held by Gerrit Cole (2021) and Curt Schilling (2002), with Cole’s streak still active.

The old record for strikeouts without a walk to begin a season was 51, held by Kenley Jansen (2017).

Jack Flaherty (7-0) struck out six and gave up four hits over six innings for St. Louis, which won for the 15th time in its last 20 games.

ROCKIES 13-8 REDS

Josh Fuentes homered among his three hits and drove in a career-high four runs, Garrett Hampson also went deep, and host Colorado beat Cincinnati.

Chi Chi Gonzalez threw seven shutout innings, Yonathan Daza had three hits and Ryan McMahon, Connor Joe and Raimel Tapia had two hits each for Colorado.

Jonathan India had two hits in the eighth inning, including a three-run homer, while Tyler Stephenson also homered for the Reds. Cincinnati center fielder Nick Senzel left in the third inning with a left heel contusion and Mike Moustakas left in the fifth inning with an apparent hand injury.

ASTROS 4-3 RANGERS (11)

Myles Straw scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the 11th inning as Houston claimed a walk-off victory over visiting Texas.

With the bases loaded and Chas McCormick facing a 1-2 count, Texas lefthander Brett Martin uncorked a curveball that handcuffed catcher Jonah Heim and allowed Straw to score from third base.

Houston managed just three runs in five innings off Mike Foltynewic­z, all of them coming on a bases-clearing double by Jose Altuve with one out in the second inning. Foltynewic­z gave up eight hits and three walks while striking out three.

RED SOX 8-1 ATHLETICS

Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs as host Boston snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided a three-game sweep by Oakland.

Bobby Dalbec added a two-run homer and J D Martinez had his team-leading 33rd RBI for the Red Sox. Boston reclaimed a share of the major league lead in wins with 23.

Ex-Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland went 2-for-4 for the A’s and Matt Olson drove in the lone run for Oakland, which had won four of five and seven of its last 10.

GIANTS 3-1 PIRATES

Steven Duggar homered and Anthony DeSclafani allowed one hit over five scoreless innings as visiting San Francisco downed Pittsburgh in a series opener.

Mike Yastrzemsk­i added an RBI triple for the Giants, who have won three games in a row. DeSclafani (3-1) walked one and struck out five. The only hit he gave up was Jacob Stallings’ single in the first.

Will Craig homered for the Pirates, who are 3-11 in their past 14.

INDIANS 4-2 MARINERS

Zach Plesac pitched eight innings of twohit, two-run ball as Cleveland won at Seattle. The right-hander, who had been on the losing end of two no-hitters this season, held the Mariners hitless through the first seven innings.

Plesac (3-3) walked three and struck out two. Emmanuel Clase got two outs in the ninth but then walked the next three batters to load the bases. Bryan Shaw came on to strike out Luis Torrens for his first save of the season.

Franmil Reyes and Jose Ramirez hit home runs for the Indians, who spoiled the major league debut of Logan Gilbert (0-1).

The Seattle right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in four innings, with no walks and five strikeouts. The Mariners got a two-run homer from Dylan Moore in the eighth.
