Dates festival starts tomorrow

-

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MEC) is organising a competition for palm trees in houses as part of the third local dates festival, which will be held at Souq Waqif from tomorrow until August 4.

The aim of the competition is to encourage the owners of house gardens to plant different types of palm trees on their premises and to maintain them properly, the MME has said.

The competition also aims to enhance the exchange of experience on the best types of dates and how to grow them.

The MME’s Agriculture Affairs Department has started receiving applications, at its headquarters, from people willing to take part in the competition.

Applications are being received during normal working until tomorrow.

The competition will continue until the end of the dates festival.

The ministry had recently announced that the third edition of the local dates festival will see the participation of a number of local farms and companies.

The festival, sponsored by the Souq Waqif management, is part of the MME’s efforts to maintain the cultural heritage of the country and attract more tourists, in addition to encouraging farmers to preserve and develop their palm trees and keep them in the best shape possible.

The festival will feature all types of Qatari dates and the participating farms will display their produce for sale throughout the event.
