Unemployment rate in capital highest in UK
The unemployment rate in London is now the highest in Britain after a jump in the number of people out of work in the capital bucked the trend of shortening dole queues in the rest of the country. An extra 17,000 Londoners began looking for work in the three months to May, taking the jobless total to 255,000, or 5.1% of the working population, official figures showed. That compares with a national rate of 4.2%, and makes London the country’s worst unemployment blackspot. It will raise concerns about the impact that uncertainty over Brexit is having on London’s economy. The south-east region has a jobless rate of 3.2%.
