Advisory Council Speaker attends IPU meet in Geneva
Meetings of the 139th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) kicked off at Geneva Conference Centre yesterday with the participation of the Advisory Council Speaker Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud.
The current session, which was opened by Inter-Parliamentary Union President Gabriela Cuevas Barron, is held under the theme “Parliamentary Leadership in Promoting Peace and Development in the Age of Innovation and Technological Change”.
The meetings will discuss a number of important issues related to the role of the world parliaments in promoting development and peace.
The emergency item on climate change received the highest percentage of votes in the voting session on the emergency items on the agenda of the IPU General Assembly.
The session was attended by several members of the Advisory Council and Qatar Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva ambassador Ali Khalfan al-Mansouri.
Al-Mahmoud meets speakers of parliaments: The Advisory Council Speaker HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud met separately with Duarte Pacheco, chair of the Twelve Plus Group, European countries, Australia and Canada and head of the Portuguese delegation; Jacob Mudenda, president of the African Group and Zimbabwe parliament speaker and Wesley Simina, president of the Asia-Pacific Group and Micronesia parliament speaker, on the sidelines of the meetings of 139th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The meetings discussed relations between Qatar and the Twelve Plus Group, European countries, Australia and Canada, the African Group and the Asia-Pacific Group and ways to support, develop and strengthen such relations, in addition to discussing the most important topics on the agenda of the 139th IPU General Assembly.
