QU earns recognition in 2019 Times Higher Education rankings
Qatar University (QU) has said it continues to be recognised in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, placing 201–250 in the Computer Science subject for the second year and 176–200 in the Engineering & Technology subject for 2019.
QU has improved in its computer science ranking from 2018, when the university was placed 251-300, it said in a statement yesterday. The announcement was made by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings recently.
The Computer Science ranking judges world-class universities across all of their core missions, teaching, research, knowledge transfers and international outlook, while the Engineering & Technology Subject ranking highlights universities that are leading across electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical and general engineering subjects.
Commenting on the announcement, QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham said: “This is a proud achievement for Qatar University. We are pleased to see the fruits of our commitment and dedication to quality education and to steering the organisation in the direction of world-class standard in research, teaching, international outlook, and in our strong links with industry.
“This achievement will resonate not only throughout the QU community but also with parents, prospective students and faculty, industry partners and our academic collaborations at home and abroad.”
THE World University Rankings editor Phil Baty added, “Qatar University’s performance is particularly impressive this year, because Times Higher Education has added many new additions to its rankings database.
As more and more universities apply to be judged against THE’s rigorous, global performance indicators, the competition gets more intense and universities have to run just to stand still in the zero-sum rankings. So, to move up in these circumstances is a great achievement and testament to the hard work of many people at Qatar University.”
QU is hosting The Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Summit 2019 from January 14 to 16, 2019, in collaboration with THE. World-class experts, top leaders from university and industry sectors, policymakers and many more players from the world’s emerging economies will gather to share expertise with the aim of advancing knowledge economies for high-value return to societies.
Baty said about the summit, “We are very excited to be hosting a major international summit with Qatar University in January, where global university leaders can share best practice and see at first hand the resilience shown by Qatar University and the great social impact it is having.”
