Honduran Social Security institute officials detained

Ten former members of the board of directors of the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS) were detained on charges of involvemen­t in a massive corruption scheme. The suspects purchased unnecessar­y equipment that has not been used, Luiz Guimaraes from MACCIH, an Organisati­on of American States (OAS) mission against corruption in Honduras, alleged. Dozens of people, including the institute’s former director, had already been arrested on corruption charges. Hundreds more are suspected of having participat­ed in stealing more than $300mn from social security-linked funds.
