Honduran Social Security institute officials detained
Ten former members of the board of directors of the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS) were detained on charges of involvement in a massive corruption scheme. The suspects purchased unnecessary equipment that has not been used, Luiz Guimaraes from MACCIH, an Organisation of American States (OAS) mission against corruption in Honduras, alleged. Dozens of people, including the institute’s former director, had already been arrested on corruption charges. Hundreds more are suspected of having participated in stealing more than $300mn from social security-linked funds.
