-

The first Flowers Festival, organised by Souq Waqif in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), opened on Thursday.

The opening ceremony was attended by Nasser Rashid alNuaimi, general director of the Private Engineering Office (PEO); Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser al-Thani, assistant undersecretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs at the MME; Mohamed al-Salem, director of Souq Waqif; as well as a number of officials from the PEO and the ministry.

Al-Salem said in a press statement that the event has been organised by the Souq Waqif management under the supervision of the Private Engineering Office. The festival is being held for the first time and aims to support Qatari products in particular, displaying the produce of nurseries and local companies that include flowers of all kinds. Besides, different types of imported flowers are also on display.

The festival includes shops and nurseries marketing their flowers, seedlings and accessories related to ornamental plants, according to al-Salem. He noted that the event aims to introduce the public to local companies engaged in the field of floristry and gives them the opportunity to purchase flowers of all kinds and enjoy the exhibits at the festival. These are in addition to the promotion of Souq Waqif, where the event is being held to coincide with the beginning of the winter season. The moderate weather is an opportunity for the public to visit the place.

The 10-day festival opens its doors to the public from 9am to 10pm, in the West Square of Souq Waqif. The official expects the festival to attract people from different segments and ages.
