HBKU to host talk by UN chief

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), will host a public lecture by António Guterres, pictured, United Nations secretary-general, at Education City on December 16.

The lecture is part of the ‘Education City Speaker Series’, which is an initiative of QF that promotes knowledges­haring and open discussion­s across a range of thoughtpro­voking topics with local and internatio­nal experts.

The lecture’s topic will be ‘The Importance of Multilater­alism in a Time of Unpreceden­ted Challenges’.

Dr Ahmad M Hasnah, president of HBKU, said, “HBKU is committed to engaging students and the local community in key issues with global experts and thought leaders, and it is an exceptiona­l honour for us to welcome HE António Guterres to HBKU to address the wider community in Qatar.

“Hosting someone of Guterres’ stature aligns with our academic institutio­n’s core objectives of promoting open dialogue and knowledge exchange through lectures and seminars. Members of the wider community are welcome to attend Guterres’ lecture; his extensive expertise and overview of current global developmen­t challenges will no doubt contribute to a highly rewarding session.”

Guterres is a Portuguese politician and diplomat, serving as the ninth secretary-general of the United Nations. From June 2005 – December 2015 he held the position of the United Nations High Commission­er for Refugees.

The lecture will be held at Minaretein (College of Islamic Studies building) at Education City on December 16 at 11.30am.
