Parks, nature reserve open in Al Khor

Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipali­ty, in co-operation with the Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme (RLIC-COP), yesterday opened two parks and a nature reserve for the public.

The opening ceremony was attended by a number of senior officials from the municipali­ty and RLIC-COP. The two new parks are Al Qarma Beach Garden and Al Khor Plaza, while the nature reserve is called Al Shu’aa Reserve.

The opening of these new facilities is part of a plan to expand public parks and gardens in order to increase green spaces and recreation­al areas for people living Al Khor and Al Thakhira, the Ministry of Municipali­ty and Environmen­t (MME) has said in a statement.

Al Qarma Beach Garden is spread over 10,500sqm with a green space of 650sqm. It hosts a variety of trees and has two children’s play zones with sun shades. The park, located along the seashore, has solar-powered lighting columns in addition to a host of flowers, a walking track and seating arrangemen­ts.

Al Khor Plaza covers an area of 22,500sqm and comes with a green space of around 19,000sqm, a water fountain and a circular walking track, in addition to 45 trees and varieties of plants and flowers. Al Shu’aa Reserve also comes with green spaces, totaling 13,000sqm, and is illuminate­d entirely through solar power. The reserve boasts of 62 trees and different types of birds and animals, including 132 ducks and geese, three ostriches, three goats, 14 quills, 110 pigeons as well as the Arabian Oryx and deer.
