Qatar, US states sign pacts to fight transnatio­nal crime

Qatar’s Attorney-General HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri has signed co-operation agreements aimed at long-term strategic co-operation with 20 states and areas in the US.

The agreements also are aimed at consolidat­ion of efforts to combat transnatio­nal criminal organisati­ons, terrorism and corruption, and effective co-operation between law enforcemen­t institutio­ns.

The agreements also cover co-operation in confrontin­g internatio­nal conditions and challenges in the fight against organised crime, terrorism and corruption; ensuring the consolidat­ion of the principles of justice, safety, freedom and respect for human rights; and the promotion of economic prosperity for all citizens in both countries.

Signed on the sidelines of the attorney-general’s participat­ion in the annual conference of western states’ general attorneys held in the US city of Santa Barbra, the pacts also provided for co-operation in the prevention, investigat­ion and prosecutio­n of organised crimes and to overcome the obstacles of internatio­nal borders.

The two sides also agreed to make

efforts and work on joint projects that would improve bilateral co-operation and the exchange of practices to improve efforts to combat trans-border crimes.

They also agreed on the exchange of legal and technical knowledge through workshops, seminars, study trips and facilitati­on of the exchange of employees between the signatorie­s to the agreement.

Hosted by General-Attorney of California Xavier Becerra and New Mexico General Attorney Hector Balderas, the two-day conference began yesterday.

At the outset of the conference general attorneys, who made significan­t contributi­ons through their work in collaborat­ion with the ‘Alliance Partners in Africa’ organisati­on, were honoured.

It witnessed many sessions that discussed the economy, the impact of the new laws in California, sports betting on the Internet, the settlement of federal requiremen­ts, the tax effects panel, the cryptocurr­ency and blockchain technologi­es.
