A year of achievemen­ts for Ashghal

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has added several developmen­t projects to its credit during 2019. The achievemen­ts include completion of local roads, express highways, intersecti­ons, bridges, sewage projects and buildings.

Expressing his gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the government for the support, Ashghal President Saad bin Ahmed al-Muhannadi said all the projects could be completed on schedule notwithsta­nding the ongoing unjust blockade.

Expressway­s and roads As per the data received by Gulf Times, Ashghal completed more than 150km of highway works until November 2019 taking the total length of the highway network in the country to more than 750km.

The year witnessed remarkable developmen­ts with the prestigiou­s Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor marking the completion of more than 70% of works. Al Watiyyat Interchang­e and new bridges at Makkah Al Mukarramah and Umm Lekhba intersecti­ons were opened. The developmen­ts brought in remarkable improvemen­t in traffic flow at Al Luqta, Al Gharrafa, Al Waab and Al Rayyan areas.

In 2019, Ashghal could complete 35% of works of Duhail Intersecti­on that will reduce travel time by 90%.

The works at a cost of QR800mn are scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021. On Al Khor Road, a 33km-long stretch was opened in March in addition to five interchang­es on various occasions during the year. More than 92% of works of the road have been completed.

The 195km Al Majd Road, stretching from Mesaieed to Al Khor, was opened in February reducing travel time by more than 50%. The unique design offers separate truck and car tracks, enhancing safety.

Ashghal also opened two new tunnels at the Mesaimeer Intersecti­on to provide free flow for traffic from E-Ring Road and heading to Rawdat Al Khail Street and the industrial area road. More than 92% of the works of Khalifa Avenue Road project were also completed.

Local Areas Infrastruc­ture Programme

Ashghal’s efforts resulted in the completion of 382km local roads through the programme. At West Muaither, roads and drainage water services were provided for more than 1,300 housing plots while 21km road was erected along with pedestrian and cycle lanes at North Bani Hajir to serve 380 residentia­l plots. More than 600 lighting poles were also set up. Further, the B-Ring Road developmen­t project was also launched in 2019 and seven new contracts to serve 3,090 housing plots signed by Ashghal.

Sewerage Projects

In February, excavation of the 10km long outfall tunnel of Mesaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project was started. The outfall tunnel is a significan­t part of Mesaimeer Tunnel that will accommodat­e surface and storm water received from the

Networks drainage networks of Doha. In 2019, the works to develop four wastewater pumping stations were also started.

As per the plans, the capacity of the pumping stations will be increased by 62% to 211% in order to absorb the current and future wastewater flows in various areas.

Ashghal also completed Al Karaana Lagoon Reclamatio­n and Rehabilita­tion Project that helped the area to get transforme­d into a healthy natural environmen­t making it home to a variety of birds.

Building Projects Ashghal completed constructi­on of the new Trauma and Emergency Department at Hamad General Hospital. The fourstorey building has 348 treatment and service rooms and a multi-level parking space. A total area of 27,000sq m was newly constructe­d while 3,000sq m of the previous Emergency Department was reconstruc­ted.
