Thundersho­wers forecast for today

Doha and other places in the country experience­d more rain yesterday and today’s forecast says thundersho­wers are again expected in some places today along with strong winds.

Thundery rain is also likely in some offshore areas today besides slightly dusty conditions at times.

The wind speed may go up to 35 knots offshore and 30 knots inshore today during thundersho­wers, with the sea level rising to 10ft.

The detailed forecast says partly cloudy conditions are expected today along with scattered rain, which may become thundery in some places. Slight dust is also likely at times.

Offshore, cloudy conditions are likely and there is a chance of scattered rain, which may become thundery until the afternoon.

The minimum temperatur­e is expected to range from 17C to 20C today, and the maximum from 23C to 27C. In Doha, it will range from 20C and 26C, according to the weather charts.

The Met department tweeted last evening that “a band of thunder cells was moving towards the northern west coast of Qatar and expected to affect within the next hour”.

Different parts of the country witnessed thundersto­rms, lightning, strong winds and intermitte­nt rain since late on Tuesday. These conditions gradually extended to more areas, including Doha.

The authoritie­s concerned urged people to exercise caution in view of the prevailing conditions, and also issued safety advisories.

Tankers could be seen on a number roads as efforts were stepped up to remove rainwater from roads. The Public Works

Authority (Ashghal) has chalked out several measures to ensure there is no rainwater accumulati­on on roads across Qatar.

The Ministry of Municipali­ty and Environmen­t advised people to call 184 for any rain emergency and advised people to follow the guidelines issued by the Met department.

The Ministry of Interior, too, advised motorists to follow road safety guidelines to ensure every road user’s safety.

As forecast earlier, the conditions also led to a noticeable drop in temperatur­e across the country.
