Msheireb Green Programme unveiled at ‘Talk Green’ event

Msheireb Properties launched the ‘Msheireb Green Programme’ dedicated to cafes and restaurant­s at Msheireb Downtown Doha to encourage the implementa­tion of sustainabi­lity best practices in line with the company’s mission and vision.

The programme was announced during the first edition of ‘Talk Green’ event, organised by Msheireb Properties as part of Qatar Sustainabi­lity Week activation­s in collaborat­ion with Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC).

The first edition of ‘Talk Green’ was held at Barahat Msheireb for corporates, institutio­ns, and youth to highlight eco-related solutions and strategies on sustainabi­lity to the public and to foster public awareness and participat­ion. On day one, Talk Green had speakers from Msheireb Properties, Shell, QGBC, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and Qatar Foundation (QF).

In her talk, Maryam al-Jassem, PR and communicat­ions manager at Msheireb Properties, announced that the ‘Msheireb Green Programme’ that will be implemente­d in Msheireb Downtown Doha starting December 2021, encourages F&B outlets to implement sustainabi­lity practices to receive Gold or Platinum certificat­es. Additional­ly, for those F&B outlets in Msheireb Downtown Doha which qualify, Msheireb Properties and QGBC will submit their applicatio­ns for the Green Key Award, the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmen­tal responsibi­lity and sustainabl­e operation within the food & beverage industries.

A special committee from Msheireb Properties and QGBC will asses the participan­ts and their adherence to the programme criteria. Outlets that achieve 50% of the criteria will receive Gold certificat­e while those achieve 75% will receive Platinum certificat­e.

The criteria of Msheireb Green Programme include special practices such as water and electricit­y efficiency, waste collection and segregatio­n, ecofriendl­y sanitisers, paper cups and tools instead of plastic, and promoting sustainabi­lity among staff and customers.

At Talk Green, representi­ng Msheireb Properties, Ali al-Yafai talked about the sustainabi­lity pillars that the organisati­on has adopted in Msheireb Downtown Doha. These four pillars are: Connectivi­ty, water efficiency, power consumptio­n, and waste collection. Al-Yafai said that the implementa­tion of these make Msheireb Properties an exemplary city district for sustainabi­lity, and the largest LEED certified building in the world.

Meshal al-Shammari from QGBC highlighte­d the objectives of the the Qatar Sustainabi­lity Week National Campaign to raise awareness and promote sustainabi­lity within the local community. He called on the individual­s to implement sustainabi­lity practices in the daily life. Al-Shammari underlined the QGBC’s effort to promote sustainabi­lity through conference­s, partnershi­ps, and environmen­tal initiative­s.

Abdel Rahman al-Miftah, sustainabi­lity and environmen­tal expert, SC, talked about The Sustainabi­lity Programme of Qatar 2022. He said that SC is seeking to accomplish 11 objectives of the UN Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Goals, in collaborat­ion with Qatar and Fifa. He also showcased the efforts by the committee to promote sustainabi­lity, including human developmen­t, workers welfare, employee’s empowermen­t.

Msheireb Properties will activate Barahat Msheireb for Sustainabi­lity Week for 7-days ending on October 30. The week will be concluded with a series of workshops dedicated to promoting sustainabi­lity practices, especially among youth and children.
