Qatar attends meeting of General Conference on Weights and Measures
Qatar is participating in the 27th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), which is being held at Versailles Palais des Congres, France, from Nov 15-18.
HE the Chairperson of Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology engineer Mohamed bin Saud Mohamed al-Musallam represented Qatar at the conference, among delegations from more than a hundred countries.
The CGPM is the legislative arm of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, which is an international scientific organisation established by The Metre Convention signed in Paris in 1875, to co-ordinate international standards for metrology, develop metric system, and to preserve the international system of units.
The conference discusses over four days many technical, scientific issues and reports submitted by the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology, Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry, Consultative Committee for Thermometry, Consultative Committee for Ionising Radiation, and other scientific and technical committees.
Additionally, the conference reviews the working papers submitted by the participating international organisations including the World Meteorological Organisation, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the International Organisation for Standardisation.
The conference will address vital topics on the international scene, including the role of time and frequency metrology in space missions, metrology in monitoring accuracy, metrology for accurate satellite-based observations of climate variables, and accurate diagnostics as part of metrology readiness for potential future pandemic events. In addition, the participants will review and approve the International Bureau of Weights and Measures plan for 2024-2027, which covers several areas, including physical measures, time measures, and chemical measures.
Among the most prominent decisions presented to the conference for adoption are a draft resolution on redefining the second, the future use and development of universal time, and expanding the field of symbols that precede the international system of units.(QNA)
