Qatar Media Corporation (QMC) participated yesterday in a scientific seminar held at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat General in Cairo, on the role of media and television and radio programmes in addressing issues related to terrorism and national security.

Speaking at the seminar, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector of the Arab League ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi affirmed that the Arab League is firmly convinced that the media, with all its components, is an essential factor in confronting the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism; expressing the Arab League’s aspiration to work and closely co-ordinate with all partners.

This is to enrich the communication process and awareness work aimed at immunising Arab societies, especially young people, against the dangers of extremism and intellectual deflation.

Khattabi pointed out that the preparation of radio and television programmes remains at the core of the media tools that most influence public opinion.

He stressed the need for good academic training, and honing the capabilities and skills of those who prepared these programmes to possess sufficient professional know-how, especially with regard to the commitment to accuracy in covering terrorist events, and beware of the fallacies that have become sweeping the digital space, and not fall into exaggeration of these events, which may affect the tranquillity of citizens and the safety of national security.

The three-day seminar is held in implementation of the decision of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information on studying approaches to refine skills and capabilities in the field of radio and television in order to contribute to efforts of terrorism and extremism combat.
