BREXIT Party leader Nigel Farage blamed “radicalised” supporters of Britain remaining in the European Union after he was showered in milkshake on Monday during a campaign event for European Parliamentary elections.

A man stepped in front of Farage and threw milkshake at him as he walked along a street in the north-eastern English city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

A bodyguard quickly grabbed the man and handed him over to police, according to video of the incident posted on social media.

“Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible,” Farage tweeted later.

“For a civilised democracy to work, you need the losers consent; politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this,” he said, referring to the 2016 Brexit referendum, in which 52 per cent voted to leave the EU.

Polls suggest the Brexit Party, launched last month, will win at least one-third of votes in Thursday’s British elections to the European Parliament, potentially making it the country’s largest party in Strasbourg.

Voters appear to be polarising between Leave and Remain parties, especially the Brexit Party and Liberal Democrats, who have also seen a surge in support, political scientist John Curtice told the BBC on Monday.

Several other attacks with milkshakes have been reported on pro-Brexit political campaigners in recent days.

They include four separate attacks on right-wing activist Carl Benjamin, a candidate for the UK Independence Party, which Farage led until 2016. Police are investigating after Benjamin tweeted a rapethemed message about a proEU Labour lawmaker.
