QATAR can play a significant role in Oman’s pursuit of becoming a year-round tourist destination by 2040, a top Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry official said in Doha on Monday.

The country has identified 14 cultural, natural and urban locations to be developed as clusters as part of its National Tourism Strategy, Chamber’s Tourism Committee Chairman Ali bin Salim al Hajari has said.

This strategy opens up several opportunities for countries such as Qatar to invest in Oman’s thriving tourism industry, he said.

The National Tourism Strategy details how Oman will reach its tourism goals by deploying world-class planning and development.

Hajari led an Omani delegation to Doha, where they had a meeting with Qatar Chamber officials, on Monday.

The two sides discussed means of enhancing cooperation and exploring mutual investment opportunities available in Qatar and Oman.

Hajari said the visit was aimed at deepening commercial relations with Qatar in tourism and reviewing facilities offered by the two countries for businessmen willing to invest in this sector.

The Omani government, he added, offered several incentives to attract more investments in the tourism sector such as duty exemptions and allocation of plots for tourism projects.

Qatar Chamber Assistant Director General for Government Relations and Committee Affairs Ali bu Sherbak al Mansouri said Qatar had accorded “special importance” to the tourism sector.

“Qatar is an important tourist destination and holds tremendous growth potential. It is a haven for mega events and activities,” he added.

Qatari businessmen were interested in learning about the investment opportunities in Oman, especially in the tourism sector, Mansouri said, assuring the visiting delegation of all possible cooperation from QC in bringing the private sectors of the two countries together.

Ahmed al Obaidli, the Director of Exhibitions Department at the National Tourism Council of Qatar, highlighted the Qatari tourism potential, as well as the efforts and the contributions of the private sector towards preparing Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
