Reckless driving in Sealine: Offenders may get 6 years in jail
The Public Prosecution (PP) will not tolerate reckless drivers and won’t allow them to endanger their lives as well as that of others, a top official has said.
Ahmed Youssef al Kuwari, Head of the Traffic Prosecution, said the cases of traffic violation in the Sealine area are being investigated and the violators will be referred to the court soon.
He said the traffic offenders face a jail term of up to six years in the event of injuries to passengers resulting from negligence or failure to comply with laws. The authorities may also confiscate the vehicle in such a case, he added.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Kuwari said the Public Prosecution is competent to investigate and dispose of the crimes mentioned in Law No 19 of 2007 regarding traffic law and its amendments.
Kuwari said a number of people have been arrested for traffic law violations in the Sealine area in the last couple of days, and they have been transferred to the Public Prosecution. “Investigations started immediately against the accused,” he added.
HE said the Sealine area, which is a tourist place, has now become known for reckless driving. “We can’t close our eyes to it. As an investigative authority, we receive reports in this regard and the perpetrators of these crimes are referred to us. We take necessary measures against them,” he said, adding that anyone who puts his life as well as that of others at risk would face strict action.
“The duty of the Public Prosecution is to confront it and protect society,” he said.
Reckless driving, driving a vehicle without licence plates or concealing them attract a jail term of up to three years, he said. If reckless driving results in accidents or injuries, then the jail term may be increased up to six years, he added.
