THE Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Department of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is encouraging its staff to develop a culture of regular walking.

Department Executive Director Occupational Health and Safety Division Dr Huda al Naimi said she is encouraging her staff to cultivate the habit of regular walking even if it’s for a few minutes.

She said, for the last almost seven years, she has been leading her staff in a 10-minute walk once a week within the Medical City during the pleasant weather days.

“By seeing us walking around, a number of other departments have approached us to join. Now, we can see doctors, nurses from various clinics and staff from engineering and administrative departments joining us in the walk,” she said.

Dr Naimi added, “We encourage everyone to move from their offices even for five minutes and take benefit of the opportunity as we have beautiful weather. We have nice and safe place within HMC premises to walk.”

The OHS department of Hamad Medical Corporation comprises five sections -- Radiation Safety, Fire Safety, Environmental Safety, Staff Medical Center and the Risk Assessment Section, which manage health and safety for the corporation which employs approximately 20,000 professionals from over 90 countries.

Dr Naemi, a visiting lecturer in the field of Medical Radiation, has represented Qatar in a number of international meetings and conferences in the health and radiation fields, including those organised by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
