THE atar Red Crescent society ( RCS) has praised UN General Assembly’s decision to adopt a proposal by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Education above All and UN Sustainable Development Goals Advocate, to establish September 9 as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

“The RCS appreciates this historic achievement, which is a fruit of the great efforts of our state of atar and particularly HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. It will protect the right to education in armed conflict areas and ensure the follow-up by providing the officials with the technical support to hunt down those who attack schools,”

RCS said in a press statement. “This may have a positive impact on society and lead to its development and prosperity.”

The statement added, “The RCS confirms that this achievement is in keeping with its high principles, which will enhance the protection of the right to education, with providing an environment to support schools in remote and poor areas as well as educational institutions in conflict and disaster areas. It will also enable children to exercise their legitimate right to receive education without fear, making them active and good members in their communities.”

The RCS said the measure will enhance the principles, values and trust in the generations through educating and enlightening their minds, contributing to the cultures and allowing the students to secure their future and the future of societies.

The efforts of the RCS are aimed at supporting and providing education all over the world, particularly in areas of armed conflict. The

RCS affirms that this declaration is an endorsement of the right of children and young people to education, which will empower them to build their communities, and serve the interests of the international community, the statement continued.

The RCS said, it supports, as a humanitarian charity, many projects that provide access to education and create an environment for people in unsafe areas to have access to this right.

In Afghanistan, the RCS has established temporary schools in remote areas, and a plan has been implemented to attract girls to schools.

RCS also has worked on the maintenance and rehabilitation of old schools.

In Syria, the RCS supports the education of university students by paying for their studies at the University of Bashaksehir in Turkey. The charity and the university, situated in the heart of Istanbul, have signed a pact to ensure the right of these students to continue their higher education.

The RCS also focuses on reducing school dropouts - due to security reasons or extreme poverty -- by providing them with an appropriate and stimulating environment, and helping education staff to reintegrate them to complete their education.

In Nepal, the RCS has built three primary schools in the ‘Kaval Westu’, Gorkha District, and has provided assistance to some schools to ensure transportation for students to reach schools.

The RCS has strengthened its financial support for Nepal’s education sector by helping special needs people, as they are an important part of the society and they have the right to participate in their country’s development.

RCS and Education above All share common goals based on their objectives to achieve equal educational opportunities for all people, particularly in remote and conflict areas all over the world.

RCS seeks to strengthen its relationship with Education above All foundation and enhance the partnership opportunities to support education and the right of the marginalised and the poor to study, the statement added.
