SC expert stresses importance of sustainability at mega events
FOLLOWING last April’s successful delivery of an online lecture on sustainability for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the Supreme Committee for Delivery Legacy (SC) participated in another virtual lecture with students of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) entitled Sustainability in Mega Events’.
The SC’s Sustainability and Environmental subject matter expert Orjan Lundberg spoke to students in the Masters of Sport and Entertainment Management class at HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering about the importance of implementing sustainability practices in the organising of major events like the FIFA World Cup.
“It is always great fun to engage with students on sustainability. I shared some insights from developing and delivering the sustainability programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” said Lundberg. “Equipping future event managers with sustainability knowledge takes us a step closer to leaving a legacy of sustainable events in Qatar and will help set new industry standards for future mega events.”
This week’s session forms part of a lecture series that HBKU has partnered with the SC to deliver to students in the Masters of Sport and Entertainment Management
class a joint degree programme being delivered by the University of South Carolina and HBKU with a second lecture to take place in October, 2020, for the HBKU’s Venue Management class in one of the following three topics Security, Workers’ Welfare and Fan Engagement.
Knowledge sharing activities like the HBKU Lecture Series not only help build awareness around the SC’s mission, vision and different programmes, it is also considered one of the most important legacies of hosting the next FIFA World Cup 2022. By sharing the knowledge gained from hosting Qatar 2022, future generations can ensure that mega-sporting events are delivered in a sustainable manner.
Beyond partnerships with different educational institutions in Qatar and around the world, the SC’s many other legacy programmes also play a key role in the delivery of knowledge sharing, primarily Josoor Institute a first of its kind centre of excellence that works to build capacity in the area of the sports and events industries in Qatar and the MENA region through education, training, professional certification, consultancy and research.
Other outreach initiatives include Generation Amazing, a legacy programme established in 2010 to address social issues through football for development training, in Qatar and around the world.
