Bayern’s Lewandowski cuts training short as scoring history beckons
BAYERN Munich striker Robert Lewandowski cut training short on Thursday as the Bundesliga champions aim to have him ready to make scoring history on Saturday in Freiburg.
Lewandowski has 39 league goals this campaign, one short of Gerd Mueller’s seemingly eternal record of 40 for Bayern in 1971-72.
Bayern trained for the first time since moving into their 10-day coronavirus quarantine camp to end the season and Lewandowski did “a slightly reduced session in order to manage his workload,” the club said.
Lewandowski would likely have bettered Mueller’s record already had he not been injured on international duty late March.
His tally has come from 27 appearances and includes a hat-trick against Borussia Moenchengladbach last time out to move within one of Mueller and two of a new record.
With 15 goals in his last eight outings, Lewandowski’s form suggests the best-mark is his for the taking either in Freiburg or a week later when Bayern host Augsburg to end the season.
French midfielder Corentin Tolisso also returned to training said Bayern, following a tendon tear in his left thigh in mid-February.
