Iranian activists promote protests to commemorate ‘Bloody November’
TEHRAN: Activists in Iran have called for several days of protests and strikes to commemorate the violent crackdown on antigovernment demonstrations in 2019.
The protests three years ago, which have become known as “Bloody November,” left several hundred people dead.
Calls to join the commemorative events through Thursday have been circulating online for several days. Given the restriction of the internet, activists are also increasingly relying on written material to promote the protests. In the capital Tehran, thousands of demonstrators gathered at universities, central squares and bazaars on Tuesday, witnesses reported. Security forces are said to have used violence against the protesters in several places. The 2019 protests were triggered by rising petrol prices. However, the demonstrations quickly expanded to include opposition to the government’s authoritarian course.
