Volunteers eager for action as WC 2022 big day approaches
WHILE the world waits to hear the whistle that kicks off the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, a host of volunteers are equally eager to play their role in making the event a grand success.
As the celebrations leading up to the main event have begun, volunteers, who have received excellent training, are already out there at Corniche, Lusail and Aspire Zone.
Indian expatriate group, Qatar Chapter of Thrissur Government Engineering College (QGET) Alumni, which functions under the Indian Business and Professionals Council (IBPC) under the aegis of Indian Embassy and has 30 members volunteering for the event, has decided to highlight Qatar 2022 by celebrating 2022 as the ‘Year of Sports & Fitness’. The event seeks to promote all sports-related programmes in Qatar.
An office bearer of the forum said, “It is a proud moment for us as 30 of our members have got selected as 2022 FIFA World Cup volunteers for various roles. We are looking forward to serve 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament and make it the biggest sporting event ever. Our volunteers are assigned now to various departments including Fan Support, Media Operations, Spectator Services Support, Workforce Operations, Football Technology, Hayya Programme, Fan Festival Operations and Guest Operations.”
QGET, a diversified alumni body had received more than 100 applications for volunteering 30 of which passed muster after interview. The group has been involved in various activities right from its formation on 19th December, 1991. It has supported a number of events organised by the government here. QGET volunteers have been part of FIFA Club World Cup 2020, FIFA Arab Cup 2021, Amir Cup in 2021 and now 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Government Engineering College, located at Thrissur in Southern Indian State of Kerala, is one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering institutes in the state and has produced a number of prominent engineers who played significant and productive roles in India as well as abroad.
