Maoist menace

- Ramesh G. Jethwani Bangalore Safi H. Jannaty

Sir, the dastardly and cowardly attack this Saturday on a Congress convoy by Maoists in Chhattisgarh, killing around 30 people and injuring scores, must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. This attack exposes the glaring weaknesses on part of the police and intelligence machinery. It should serve as a wake-up call for the security establishment in Delhi that of late had started patting its back that Maoists violence was on the decline.

Government of India should take firm action against perpetrators of such ghastly crimes. This attack only means the government’s writ does not run in Maoist-infested areas, especially in the state of Chhattisgarh. This is a matter of serious concern and should be addressed if the menace is to be contained. It may also be noted that the state police alone cannot curb this menace as these Maoist militants are well trained and have drawn considerable number of comrades, equipped with modern deadly weapons, to their ranks.

This matter should be appropriately addressed considering the gravity of situation in total coordination of elite central forces with the state police. The Maoist problem should be dealt as a national internal security problem of highest order and politicians across the party lines should support the government’s action to end this menace that is affecting 200 districts of the country. human right. The Charter of UNESCO and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights highlight this right very prominently. Ironically, despite having the force of law, education or rather right to education has remained a wishful thinking for a large number of children in many Third World countries.
