Teaching unruly students a difficult task
GROWING concern about unruly behavior in schools has initiated discussions on establishing new rules to instill discipline in both genders. But how can bad behavior in schools be dealt with? Indeed, it is a challenging task for both teachers and administrative staff. Not only do disruptive students not concentrate on their studies but are also a nuisance for their classmates.
Sometimes bad behavior manifests itself in disgusting behavior such as violence among students and verbal abuse of teachers. It is important to understand that a school is an institution which teaches humility, obedience and discipline. In fact, these are the principles which form the base of education and help to make the learning experience worthwhile. Students should realize that a good education, achieved through constant endeavors for excellence is a hugely rewarding experience.
Seeing the poor discipline in children one is compelled to ask whether we, as parents, are fulfilling the role of guide and mentor? It is important to instill in our children from the very early years, good manners, the real worth of teachers and the significance of the school as an institution of learning.
Children have to be reminded that teachers deserve respect and honor because they are the beacons lighting up the path of education. No student can attain knowledge without the two principles of obedience and discipline. An unruly class will hinder the teacher from fully performing her role of educator. Disciplinary measures which are culturesensitive make it easier for teachers to keep a check on classroom discipline. They will also result in more effective teaching and keep students academically engaged.
Robert F. Merger, a learning specialist in his book ‘Developing Attitude Toward Learning’ comments that “no teaching goal can be reached unless the student is influenced to become different in some way than he was before the instruction was undertaken.” If the mother’s lap is the first institution — teachers are undoubtedly the architects who mold the future of young children, help them to appreciate education as a way to achieve personal fulfillment and to become constructive citizens of the world.
