IISR celebrates its 30th annual day with zeal

The Indian Internatio­nal Indian School Riyadh (IISR) celebrated its 30th annual day on Thursday. The event also felicitate­d meritoriou­s students for academic excellence and performanc­e in extracurri­cular activities.

Indian Ambassador Hamid Ali Rao and his wife Asiya Hamid Rao were the chief guests on the occasion.

In his brief speech, Rao encouraged the school, students and staff to continue their good work. He wished the students a bright career and do their parents and school proud. He also hoped that in the future they would serve the nation and humanity at large.

Among the prominent guests were Hifzur Rehman, Indian Embassy spokespers­on and observer of the internatio­nal Indian schools in the Kingdom.

Niaz Omar, chairman of the school management committee, presided over the annual assembly while IISR principal Shaukat Perwez gave a warm welcome to the gathering with his opening speech, highlighti­ng major achievemen­ts during the academic session.

This was followed by a detailed presentati­on of the annual report, presented by Asma Shah, vice principal of the girls section.

IISR teacher Zahida Jabeen, who was supervisor for the results made the announceme­nt for the academic excellence award.

Speaking to Arab News later, she said that girls dominated the excellence award list. The top students were awarded medals by the ambassador.

The “Best Student of the Year Award 201213” was accorded to Maha Khan and Jerin Verghese while “Best Student of the year 2013-2014” went to Sharon Giji (girls’ section) and for the boys’ section, it was shared by Bilal Sultan and Kiran Alex.

The awards ceremony was followed by a flamboyant display of cultural activities that added gaiety to the variety of entertainm­ent programs commencing with a melodious welcome song by the girl students.

These programs unfurled the hidden artistic talents of the students on the stage highlighti­ng the composite cultural heritage of India and Saudi Arabia and received great applause by the audience.

Speaking to Arab News, junior division student Lubna Khan, who participat­ed in the stage program, expressed great happiness at getting the opportunit­y to showcase her talent.
