Integrated security systems set for Saudi missions abroad

- RIYADH: SHARIF M. TAHA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has prepared an integrated security system to protect 119 Saudi diplomatic missions abroad, local media has reported, quoting ministry sources. Security experts are reportedly reviewing the security plans of the Saudi diplomatic missions, notably in countries classified as “insecure”, including Arab countries that are currently witnessing security and political turmoil.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to open the new Saudi Embassy in Baghdad in the coming few days in addition to a consulate in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Province.

In the last four decades, Saudi missions abroad have experienced some 40 attacks, including shootings, kidnappings, stonings, and written threats. Some of these attacks led to the murder of Saudi diplomats in some capitals.

In this context, the head of the Media Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Osama Al-Naqali, said that the Saudi missions abroad could successfully deal with a series of threats and security challenges in accordance with the prevailing security situation in foreign countries. However, they admitted that minor “security loopholes” exist, but added that these are limited and individualistic in their nature.

He warned against “security laxity” which would pose a high risk to some diplomatic missions, and emphasized that they should follow strict security measures, notably in countries suffering from security disturbances and political crises.

“In the framework of protecting members of diplomatic missions, the ministry has prepared an integrated security system and has implemented security awareness programs in accordance with recognized international norms and agreements, and in full cooperation with the host countries,” Al-Naqali said.

He added: “In cases where the security situation worsens and poses immense security risk to the mission and personnel, the mission will be closed down and mission members will be recalled for their safety until the situation stabilizes.”
