Retired English footballer John Barnes is winning praise for his appearance on the BBC’s debate show “Question Time,” in which he gave a passionate speech in defense of Irish actor Liam Neeson.
Neeson’s latest movie, “Cold Pursuit,” had the worst opening weekend of any of his widely released films since 2010, picking up $10.8 million at the box office.
Many commentators believe its poor performance is due to a recent interview in which Neeson recalled how he fantasized about killing a black man following the rape of a close friend.
Barnes said that instead of being vilified for his admission, Neeson deserved “credit” for saying he now felt “shame” about those feelings.
Barnes added that he believes everyone discriminates, even if only unconsciously — and that whom we discriminate against is dictated by our upbringing and environment.
After listening to the debate, @ GillWinfield tweeted: “Well said @ Officalbarnesy, the truth is a powerful thing, something to be respected and commended. If half the politicians in this country had an ounce of the honesty and integrity that you do, it would be a very different environment in which we live. #johnbarnes #Racism”
