American actress Diahann Carroll was trending worldwide following news of her death.

Carroll’s daughter Susan Kay told the Associated Press that her mother died on Friday of cancer. She was 84.

Carroll was the first black woman to have a lead role in an American TV series, in the late 1960s. She played a widowed nurse and single mother in “Julia,” which premiered on NBC in 1968. Carroll was also the first black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress, for the musical “No Strings” in 1962. Her long career ended with her last credited role as Miss Edna in the 2016 film “The Masked Saint.” Many prominent American figures and celebritie­s mourned her on Twitter. Oprah Winfrey tweeted: “Thanks for helping clear the path for me and so many others. I was honored to salute you as a Legend then, Now and Forever.”

Whoopi Goldberg tweeted: “Diahann Carroll, from Carmen Jones to Julia to Dynasty to Broadway & the recording stage’s, she did it all, worked her butt off & NEVER seemed to break a sweat. Honest and Funny and drop dead beautiful. She lived her life. R.I.P. condolence­s to the family.”

Barbra Streisand posted a picture of herself with Carroll with the caption: “RIP Diahann Carroll. You gave a lot to this world. Thank you, Love Barbra.” US Sen. Kamala Harris tweeted: “Diahann Carroll was more than an actress but an icon who inspired generation­s. She broke barriers and changed our lives and the industry for the better. May she forever Rest in Peace.” Directed by Ursula Macfarlane, the film explores the issues surroundin­g the disgraced Hollywood producer, featuring interviews with his former colleagues and the accusers.
