Tee time! Kingdom’s golf courses reopen after virus lockdown
I can’t wait to get back on the course following 10-week break, Saudi pro Othman Almulla tells Arab News
Clubs? Check. Spiked shoes? Check. Extravagantly patterned and brightly colored clothing? Check. Then you’re good to go when Saudi Arabia’s golf courses reopen on Sunday after more than two months of coronavirus lockdown.
“It is great news that we are now in a position to reintroduce the game we all love across the Kingdom,” said Majed Al-Sorour, chief executive of the Saudi Golf Federation.
It wouldn’t be golf, of course, without a few rules and regulations. Players can’t just turn up without booking, and they must wear masks and stay a safe two meters apart from each other. There will be temperature checks on arrival at the course, and anyone showing signs of illness will be asked to leave.
Golf carts may be used by only one golfer and concierge services will also be closed, meaning players will need to carry their bags to and from their own vehicles.
“We will continuously monitor the situation, both in the Kingdom and across the world, and we have not ruled out the reintroduction of further restrictions if the guidelines are not followed correctly,” Al-Sorour said.
“It is therefore imperative that both golf clubs and members take the necessary steps and adhere to guidelines, if facilities are to remain open in the weeks ahead.” Saudi professional Othman Almulla, 33, can’t wait to be back on the tee. “We’re lucky, and I think it’s a good thing as it’s going to give us another opportunity to shine a light on our sport,” he told Arab News.
“And for anyone who wants to try golf … it’s very beneficial for day-to-day exercise.”
