New desalination plant launched
Growing demand for desalinated water in the Asir and Jazan regions will now be met with the start of production by the Saline Water Conversion Corp. of desalinated water at the Shuqaiq Desalination Plant on the Red Sea coast.
It is one of nine new plants equipped with technologies that are more reliable and consume less energy.
The plants are part of plans to achieve sustainable water development, attain a leadership position in the desalination industry, and contribute to the Saudi economy and comprehensive development.
The Shuqaiq plant implements reverse osmosis technology and has a production capacity of 42,500 cubic meters of desalinated water per day.
It was completed in just six months, a third of the time frame set for similar projects. The SWCC aims at consolidating the natural water resource in various regions and cities of the Kingdom where there are severe fresh water shortages, through the process of desalination.
The corporation is also habilitated to produce electric power as a byproduct depending on economic and technical needs.
