Chicago officials have released a graphic body camera video showing a police officer shooting and killing a 13-year-old boy appearing to raise his hands in an alley.

The nine-minute video from Eric Stillman’s body camera showed the 34-year-old officer getting out of his squad car and running after Adam Toledo in an alley at 2:30 a.m. on

March 29 in Little Village, a Mexican neighborhood on the city’s west side. The video then showed Stillman yelling “stop” to Toledo before catching up to and ordering the boy to show his hands. Toledo appeared to raise his hands right before Stillman fired one shot and ran to the boy as he fell to the ground. The police officer reportedly assumed that Toledo was drawing a gun. However, the footage shows that Toledo was not holding a handgun when the officer shot him. However, the clip shows that a gun fell to the floor as Toledo was shot. According to reporters, Toledo was with a 21-year-old man who fired the gun at a passing car, drawing police to the area.

CCTV footage also shows Toledo tossing something through a gap in the fence before Stillman caught up to him. After the release of the video, Lori Lightfoot, the Chicago mayor, held a press conference to say that authorities had failed Toledo, adding: “We cannot afford to fail one more young person in our city.”

The Toledo family and the mayor have urged the public to stay calm. People on social media used the #AdamToledo hashtag to voice their opinions on the incident. @BlackVotersMtr said: “13 years old. A child was murdered by police. His hands were up. A false narrative was spread and buildings boarded up before the release of the video. That tells you all you need to know. Yet again, another family has lost a loved one.” @catgirlgogy said: “Adam Toledo was a 13-year-old Hispanic boy who was complying with the police and had his hands in the air, yet he was still shot. What harm does an unarmed boy do to ‘trained’ adults?”
