Greenwood scores for 3rd straight game as United beat Wolves
Patrick Bamford’s late equalizer rescues Leeds a point in a 1-1 draw at Burnley
Manchester United teenager Mason Greenwood scored for a third successive game to clinch a 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton on Sunday.
The 19-year-old striker’s scoring run has come just as United prepares for the second debut of Cristiano Ronaldo after the international break, 12 years after the Portugal star left Old Trafford.
There was an assist from France World Cup winner Raphael Varane, who marked his debut by providing the pass for Greenwood to score in the 80th minute.
Wolves were fuming and claimed Ruben Neves was fouled by United midfielder Paul Pogba in the buildup, with their protests rejected by referee Mike Dean.
United goalkeeper David De Gea had kept the score level before Greenwood’s winner after pulling off a sensational double save from Romain Saiss with about 20 minutes to go. He parried the defender’s header and then spread himself to thwart a follow-up from point blank range.
United has seven points from three games, while Wolves has lost every match 1-0 so far.
Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford’s late equalizer rescued Leeds a point in a 1-1 draw at Burnley to leave both sides chasing their first Premier League win of the season.
The opener from Chris Wood was the 30,000th goal scored since the start of the Premier League in 1992. Matt Lowton had time to take aim with a low shot and Wood got the faintest of touches to deflect the ball beyond goalkeeper Illan Meslier for his first goal of the season in the 61st minute.
But one moment of magic from Raphinha set up the equalizer. The Brazilian evaded two markers on the right edge of the area and when the ball broke to Jamie Shackleton, his shot was turned home by Bamford in the 86th minute.
While Burnley still earned a first point, Leeds is only on two points from three games heading into the international break when Bamford could make his England debut.
Also on Sunday, Tottenham clinched a 1-0 victory over Watford. It was a third successive win at the start of Nuno Espirito Santo’s first season in charge of the north London club.
The goal came in the 42nd minute after Son Heung-min swung in a free kick from the left wing and Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann got it all wrong, with the ball going all the way into the far corner.
Tottenham will rely on Harry Kane for goals after the striker made his first league start of the season after his hopes of a move to Manchester City fell through.
