The member of the K-pop band Astro, MJ, started his mandatory national military service on Monday.

MJ, whose real name is Myung-Jun, tearfully announced last month during the band’s fan meeting he enlisted to serve in the military.

“Today’s fan meeting is the last one before I enlist in the army,” said the K-pop idol in a video posted by fans on Twitter. “I’m so sorry that I have to deliver this kind of news today, when we’re finally meeting in person for the first time in a long while.

“I was so happy to meet AROHA (Astro’s fandom name) for the first time in a long while, and I will return as a cooler and more mature version of myself,” he said, adding, “please enjoy our fan meeting up until the very end today, and please take good care of my fellow Astro members.”

Fans took to Twitter on Sunday, sending MJ supportive messages, assuring him they would wait, and asking him to take care of himself through the locally trending hashtag “#MJWeWillMissYou.”

@CarlaCadena20 tweeted: “MJ you can’t imagine how much I’m going to miss you!!! But we will be waiting for you!!! You’re not alone !!! Aroha always with you.”

Following MJ’s enlistment announcement, Astro’s label, Fantagio, released an official statement

confirming the news and refusing to reveal the location of the singer’s enlistment for safety measures.

“In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the time and place of MJ’s enlistment will not be made public, and he will be enlisting without any special public measures,” wrote the company in the statement. “So we ask for fans’ generous understanding

in this regard.”
