Indian Festivals
Thaipusam is an important festival observed by Hindus. It is an annual procession by Hindu devotees seeking blessings, fulfilling vows and offering thanks, celebrated in honour of Lord Murugan. Hindus fulfill their vows with a 4.5 km walk carrying milk pots and wooden Kavadis - two semicircular pieces of wood or steel which are attached to a cross structure that is balanced on the shoulders of a devotee. The milk they carry is then offered to Lord Murugan at the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple. Some devotees also pierce their tongues and cheeks with skewers. Family and friends of devotees will cheer and beat drums as they march down the streets.
