How to layer like a street style pro

News from the world of fashion

The one item you should add to your wardrobe this season is the light short-sleeved jumper. It does the sartorial job without getting you all hot and bothered in the summer heat. Beautifully printed short-sleeved jumpers were spotted on the runway of Salvatore Ferragamo.

On this page, we styled one over a longsleeved white button-down. Roll up the sleeves nonchalantly to right below the elbows to balance out the rigidity of the jumper.

Details are important in street style fashion. Pile on an unexpected element in the form of a longer mesh tank top. It helps to make the white shirt appear less formal. Finish the look off by cuffing your jeans ‒ it’s an easy way of fixing a leg that is too long while also adding dimension to the look.

If the previous option is a bit daunting, try starting with a colour you know well. The trick is to play around with different tones of the same colour so that it’s more dynamic as opposed to just the same tone of blue from head to toe.

A stylish denim on denim pairing is not difficult to achieve. But take it up a notch by adding a longline T-shirt underneath. What it does is put a space while acting as a visual break between the denim pieces.

Go for a casual jacket that cuts right at the natural waist. The key is to ensure that all the layers are visible. While you’re at it, just be sure the jacket doesn’t go on too snugly or you risk looking like you’re sporting a peplum. Cuff up the sleeves to show hints of the shirt sleeves. And if the ends of the jeans look a bit worn, fold them up slightly to expose that detail.
